Getting To Know Each Other. Part One

When you see someone smiling, you think that they have everything they want in their life. But what if they don't?

There's a saying that says; 'Don't judge a book by its cover.

Just like don't judge a person by their appearance.

Jason waited for Layla beside her locker so that they could go home together. So that they could start on the project as their teacher told them it was due in a month.

"Hey, Jason. Would like to go out with me sometime?", Heather asks as she saw Layla approaching Jason.

She has always been jealous of Layla because of Jason's attention ever since he saved her from being bullied.

"No, I already have a girlfriend and I am happy with her", he tells her. Heather was mad because he had turned her down in front of her friends and she was humiliated.

"Excuse me, can I pass?", Layla asks her.

"Let's go girls. Heather tells her friends who walked away. "We have better things to do than talk to a freak".

"Thank you", Jason tells Layla.

"Why are you thanking me?", she asked him.

"Just because you arrived at a perfect moment", he tells her.

Layla takes the things she needed and then locked her locker. "Let's go. You are my ride, apparantly dad needed Naeem for something".

Okay. I can help you carry your books", he offered as he saw that she was struggling.

"Okay, but if you drop them you will pay". Books were important to Layla as she loves to read. And she hated when people who borrow books would leave dog ears on the pages.

Layla hands him her books and they walk together where he had parked his car.

He opened the passenger door to let Layla go into the car, but Layla opened it for herself as soon as his hand was about to touch the car handle.

"Let me have the books so that you can drive without any distractions", she takes them.

He got to the driver's side and started the car.

"Umm, are your parents going to be home?", Jason asked her. He wasn't nervous as he was always welcome they treated him like their own son.

"I don't know. Mum might be there", Laya answered unsure of it.

"Why?".

Nothing. I wanted to talk to your mom about something but it is okay. I will ask her another time", he tells her.

Layla didn't want to know because if Jason doesn't want to tell her then it is fine with her.

They soon arrived at Layla's house and he then parked the car.

In the driveway, two cars were already there meaning that both of Layla's parents were already home.

"Assalam Aleikum, momma, and Papa", she greeted her parents as opened the door.

Her parents owned their own business which made it easier for them to be there for their kids.

"Waleikum salaam, Layla. How's school?", her mother asked her. They didn't notice that Jason was behind her.

"It was okay. Jason and I are going to work on our project and yes we will be in the study with the door open", she tells them knowing that Jason was always welcomed him ever since Naeem brought him home.

Layla didn't know that he was her brother's best friend because she wasn't around when they met.

"Hey, Jase. I didn't see you there", Nayla tells him.

"It is okay. I am fine and you?", he asks her she replied she was fine.

"I will make some snacks for you two..."

"Umm, can I talk to you both if you don't mind?", Jason asks nervously hoping that they would say yes.

"I will be in my room", Layla told them not waiting for anyone to answer her. She walked up the stairs and into her room.

Jason walked with Nayla and Liam to the living room where they sat down. Liam is Kayla's father and also a convert. He had converted to Islam because he had fallen in love with Nayla and wanted to be with her.

But he didn't change his name.

"Okay, what did want to talk to us about?", Liam asks. He looks intimidating to anyone who tries to hurt his family.

Jason was so nervous that he didn't know where to begin. Nayla looked at her husband and swatted his shoulder.

"Really? Liam this is Jason. Stop with the tough guy exterior", she scolds him.

"Come on. You won't let him have fun", he tells her.

"Sorry, go on. Dontworry about this teddy bear. He won't hurt a fly", Nayla encouraged him to talk to her.

"You know about the situation that my parents are in. I just wanted to ask you if my mother and I could stay with you until we got back on our feet. If it will not possible I can understand", Jason explained to them.

Nayla and Liam have wanted to help Jason and his mother but she wasn't willing to leave Jason's father.

"You know that this house is always open for you and your mother. You are like family to us", Liam tells him. He knew how much Jason was suffering for what his father is doing to both him and his mother.

Jason thanked them and then he went to find Layla who was in the study waiting for him.

"You did good, Habiby", Nayla tells her husband smiling at him. Liam had been in a bad place before he met Nayla who turned out to be his savior.

"I had a great teacher", he tells her thinking of her father who helped him get his life back on track.

Jason walked into the study where he found Layla waiting for him with her face stuck in a book. In front of her were two video cameras.

"What's with the two cameras?", he asks her as he approached Layla.

"Well, one is for you and the other is for me. I know that you can't rush home to get yours so I figured you will use this one", she explains to him.

"Thanks," he tells her smiling.

No one apart from Nayla and Liam knows what his situation is like. He didn't want Naeem to look down on him as well as Layla.

"Should we start?", she asks him.

In front of them was their notebook, they each wrote questions to ask each other. They took turns taping each other.
