Derek woke up first to his wife whimpering beside him. He looked over at her, and it broke his heart. Fat tears were rolling down her face, her eyes still closed.

"Mer." Derek whispered, pressing a light kiss to her shoulder. "Wake up, it's just a dream." He said softly. Meredith unconsciously kicked her legs.

"Meredith." Derek said louder, shaking her gently. Merediths eyes snapped open and she sat up in a terror. "It's me, it's Derek. You're safe." He said soothingly.

"D-Derek." Meredith murmured, latching on tightly to a piece of his shirt. "It's okay." Derek said, rubbing her back slowly.

A knock at the door sent Meredith jumping into dereks lap. "You're okay, Mer. I'll protect you." Derek said as the door opened and Bailey and a woman recognized as the surgeon who delivered their son.

"It's just Bailey and Connie. You remember Connie, yeah?" Derek asked. "Yeah." She replied as she looked up at them.

"Hi Meredith. Hi Derek." Connie said politely. "H-hi." Meredith responded timidly. Derek could feel just how tense she was and felt horrible for her.

"I heard about the...baby, and I figured they didn't do a very good job taking care of you. I asked Connie just to take a look, if that's okay." Bailey explained.

Derek knew that would be a good idea, but he wasn't really sure what she was comfortable with. "Did you get any pain medication after?" Connie asked in a soft tone.

Meredith shook her head. This was the surgeon who delivered her son. "Y-you c-can look." Meredith said hesitantly, lifting up her gown with her good arm.

Merediths stomach was still bruised from the rib breaks and sutured from the surgery. "Okay." Connie murmured as she examined the faint line from the previous c sections.

"Definelty not stitched up correctly." Connie mumbled as she poked around. "I can probably fix up the stitching a little bit. It would be just under a light sedative." She explained.

"Well think about it." Derek said looking at his wife. "And I just wanted to check on your incision site. Callie will be in any minute to check the ribs." Bailey said, eyeing Merediths monitor. Her heart rate was pretty high.

"Grey, you can relax. Nobody is going to hurt you. Your heart rate is high." Bailey said softly.

Meredith nodded and slowly pulled away from Derek so Bailey had a better angle to check her out. Bailey poked around the incision site. "Your incision is healing well." She said with a smile as Callie came in the room.

"Hey Grey. How are you feeling?" Callie asked with a smile. "F-fine." She replied. "Can I take a peek? See if we can get you wheeling around soon." She asked.

Meredith latched on to Dereks hand and nodded. "Everything looks well. It's healing well." Callie grinned. "Do you want to try moving to the wheelchair now or wait a few minutes?" Bailey asked gently.

"N-now." Meredith whispered. "Since your leg is gonna be out of commission for a while, Derek will have to wheel you around." Callie said.

Meredith nodded and sat up, her ribs protesting in agony. "You got it." Derek encouraged, noticing her grimace.

"Slowly move your bad leg off of the bed and follow with the other. Is it okay if I help you out or do you just want Derek?" Callie asked.

"Uh....B-Bailey?" Meredith asked, a blush spreading on her face. "Sure." Bailey replied as she stepped up, happy that her former intern trusted her enough to let her help.

"S-sorry." Meredith said to Callie. "It's all right, Grey." Calle replied warmly. Meredith slowly got both of her legs handing over the bed and felt Derek and Bailey both at her side.

"Ease yourself off the bed." Callie instructed. Meredith eventually felt her feet hit the ground and she winced in pain. "You're doing good, Meredith." Bailey praised.

Derek was on the side of her broken arm, and very carefully wrapped an arm around her waist, taking some of her weight.

"Here." Callie said, bringing the chair over. Bailey and Derek both helped Meredith sit down gently. "Nice job, Meredith." Callie said with a grin. "I'm proud of you." Derek said, kissing her forehead gently.

"Want to go for a little ride?" Bailey asked. Meredith shook her head. She couldn't go out. Out of this room, anything could happen. Anyone could hit her or take her. But in this room with Derek, she was safe.

"You sure?" Callie questioned. "N-no. N-no." Meredith stammered, her heart pounding in her chest. "Okay. You don't have to go." Derek said softly.

"No." Meredith murmured, her good leg tapping up and down on the floor. "We can stay here." Derek repeated as he bent down to eye line.

Meredith looked at him and hesitantly held her arms out. Derek smiled and wrapped her into a big hug. "You're safe here, Mer. When you do want to go out, just tell me." He whispered into her ear.

"Okay." She replied, sinking into his embrace. Callie and bailey watched from a distance sadly, sad that their friend was so traumatized, but glad that she was letting her husband in.

"Bed." Meredith mumbled into his shoulder. "Okay. Do you want me to lift you?" He asked. Meredith nodded. Derek carefully lifted her up and put her in the bed.

"We're gonna go. Everything's looking good Grey, you can probably be out of here in a week or two." Bailey said. Merediths eyes widened at that.

"T-thank you." She said quietly as she played with the blanket. "You're welcome. See you tomorrow." Bailey replied as she and Callie left the room.

"Is it okay while you sleep if I take a quick shower? I'll be back before you wake up." Derek asked as he rubbed her arm soothingly. Meredith nodded and closed her eyes. "Love ya." She mumbled sleepily.

"I love you too."
