Anush was young but the permanent crease on his forehead made him look way older. He was smart and efficient, which was why he had survived so long under Dhruv. Above all, he was not a fool. He was intelligent enough to know that this job advert was not what it seemed to be. Dhruv had enough people in his army to pick one to accompany him on this trip, or just fly in to help him out. This entire candidate hunting is a sham. But what he could not make out is what Dhruv is hoping to achieve from all this.
All these thoughts came to an abrupt halt as he spotted a woman being led to into the private area of the restaurant. For a moment, his mind went blank and he just sat their soaking in the gentle beauty that the shabby salwar suit failed to hide. Also, the ensure and a bit shy glances also brought out a lot of protective instincts in him. He immediately sat a bit straighter, and send a silent prayer to whoever is listening to get the girl to his table.
His prayers were answered when the girl as directed to his table. Maya shook off the feeling of uneasiness as the glance directed at her remained unwavering. She introduced herself. The interview started.
Anush became professional as he scanned the documents Maya has brought with her. She was a school teacher who was looking for some extra-income during the holiday season. Her experience working in the cities definitely gave her an edge over the other candidates. The computer skills were also just about adequate. She would have been a good choice, only if their boss was not such a womanizer. This is one of the reasons most of the recruitment that happens through him are males.
'Are you married, Maya?'
The question caught her unprepared. The image of Dhruv flashed over her eyes, threatening to open a tide of emotions, but Maya swiftly collected herself.
'I am a widow', came the calm reply.
Anush watched the play of emotions on her face with interest. He hastened to wipe off the rudeness of the question with some explanation.
'The reason I am asking is that the working hours can be erractic, and as you don't live in the same town, you might have to stay back on some occasions. Are you willing to do that? We will arrange for accommodation, possibly in this same hotel'
Maya was about to reject the idea, when a thought came to her mind.
'Will I get paid extra?'
Anush nodded.
'Yes, I can, but not on the weekends'
'Sure, this position is only for two weeks, and if necessary, might get extended'
Maya knew she can do it, she had to do it. After all, all that extra money can go into her house, or into warm clothes. She just had to make some arrangements for Kedar.
With a promise of getting back to her as soon as possible, Anush took her leave and walked her out of the restaurant. He was a perfect gentleman and even arranged for a ride to take her to the market place. Maya decided it would not be too hard to walk for this man.
Dhruv's P.O.V
He had never waited with so much anticipation for something so trivial. He employed thousands of people and very few of them held any significance for him. Yet here he was, waiting eagerly for a temporary secretary. This hotel was grand, but was small and cosy, with exclusive views and privacy. So, it was easy for him to spot a shabby salwar suit among the usual finery and glamour. But it was not the salwar, but the face that held his attention. The fact that Anush was smiling a bit more than usual did not escape him. Irritation and annoyance battled with good sense and suddenly he had an insane desire to rush outside and grab hold of the girl. But the moment passed too soon, as the duo moved out of sight. He will have to wait another day to meet this girl. He can hardly wait.
