It had been two weeks...two weeks of bug bites from insects she'd never seen before...two weeks of adjusting to her new living quarters...two weeks of learning and figuring out the research her colleagues have gathered so far...and two weeks of realizing they hadn't gotten close to figuring out what was going on by a thread.
She was essentially working independently with everyone focusing on what they were brought here to do but she liked it that way...allowed her to focus.
Preparing her supplies for a blood draw from one of the sick female gorillas, she overheard a portion of her colleagues' conversation."Be careful going out alone Dr. Stuart, I understand you want to get more field research but the jungle is not safe" Dr. MacNally, one of the primate researchers that had arrived a few months before them said with his heavy Scottish accent.
Dr. Stuart had been complaining to Jahne days earlier about how she felt she couldn't adequately help without seeing the primates in their natural habitat and studying them. Jahne understood where her frustrations came from but she was smart enough to know if she went out into the jungle on her own she probably wouldn't make it back whether that be from just getting lost or being eating by a predator; she didn't plan on taking her chances.
"I understand that Dr. MacNally but how can I understand how this is being caused if I can't watch their day to day activities" she complains tossing her long arms in the air. "I mean what if the answer is right in front of our faces if we would just observe them" she continues.
"I'm not saying that it is out of the question to take time to go observe them and it has been done before but going alone is where the problem lies" Dr. MacNally responds. They've done this dance before; Dr. MacNally and Dr. Stuart; jahne assumed he only continued to entertain it because the man was enthralled by the expressive redhead doctor.
Hearing enough Jahne picked up her tray of supplies and took it to the bedside of her sick gorilla. She had stuck with this particular gorilla a lot more than the others that were in the tent. Her name was Kala and for her to be around so many humans she was surprisingly calm and cooperative. She didn't like needles though; they scared her and her eyes would go from gentle to wild and terrified when she saw anyone approach her with one.
She was calmer with Jahne than the other doctors when it came to the blood draws but not calm enough for a clean stick. In an effort to minimize herself or Kala getting hurt she decided it was best to sedate her and get all her blood work in one sweep rather than throughout the week. She usually did it using Kalas food and although she could tell Kala was catching on to Jahnes trick she oddly understood.
All of Jahnes colleagues were confused how she got Kala to work with her so easily when Kala was too afraid to let any of them touch her. Jahne had developed a bond with the gorilla and gained her trust enough that Kala allowed her to help her.
While getting her blood draws she could feel someone stand next to her. Cutting her eyes to her right side before going back to her task she noticed it was Dr. Wallace.
She was one of Jahnes favorite doctors to work with and was surprised when she saw that she was conducting the same research. Dr. Latonya Wallace was one of the most esteemed in their field; having received just as many if not more awards, decorations and accreditations than Jahnes own father. She was a force to be reckoned with and who Jahne looked up to as she progressed in her career.
"How's she doing" Dr. Wallace asks in a low voice.
"I noticed she was very sluggish today. It makes me worried that her illness is progressing and so I wanted to get a few labs" Jahne responds with a tired sigh. She was worried about Kala and her changing behavior.
"I noticed as well. Let me know what you find; I'm sure her son will be very worried maybe even combative if he sees his mother in the state she's been in today" Dr. Wallace's comment about the son pauses Jahnes hands as she labels the valves. She glances back to Dr. Wallace who was concentrating on Kalas chart.
"Son...I wasn't aware that she had one" Jahnes says placing the last labeled valve into its holding tray. They had a lab on site but she preferred to run the labs herself and cut out the middle man.
"Yes...the locals call him King of the Jungle" She responds giving Jahne a smirk looking over her glasses. "I've seen him once when I was doing nightly rounds...Kala had just come in days before and he came and found her" she continues looking down at the sleeping gorilla.
"It startled me at first and I almost called for help when I noticed him start to speak to her. Mind you this is a human not a gorilla" she says shocking Jahne. The entire time Jahne pictured a gorilla not a man. "And that son of hers is full man" Dr. Wallace says fanning herself.
"How is that possible" Jahne asks in disbelief. Dr. Wallace places Kalas chart back down and picks up Jahnes labs leading the way to the testing equipment. She places the valves in their slots before she answers Jahne.
"I'm not entirely sure Dr. Roberts but what I do know is it was remarkable...an anomaly but also so normal for them" She starts the machine and turns back to Jahne. "They interacted the same way I've seen infant gorillas interact with their mothers and immediately I knew but I have not seen him since"
Jahne processed her words becoming fascinated...she wanted to see him and how he interacted with gorillas. In all her research she had never seen or heard of anything like it. Yes, there have been kids raised in the wild by animals but never have they verbally communicated.
"I'll be back when those are done to go through the results with you. Not that I don't trust your abilities; it's that because I do I would like to work on this more with you personally" Dr. Wallace explains.
Jahne holds in her happy dance and goofy grin not wanting to come across as a fan girl even though she was definitely was inside. She'd dreamed of this moment where she would get to work with her and it was finally happening.
"Of course Dr. Wallace; I'm honored and grateful" she responds professionally. Watching Dr. Wallace leave the tent she turned back to Kala who was still sleeping; thoughts of this so called King of the Jungle running through her head.
