"Are they....are they dead?" I ask, my face pressed to the computer screen. That avalanche tumbled right down that mountain, eating up my boyfriend and his siblings. The people they were sent to rescue are fine.

Mr. Davenport is silently crying, as well as Leo.

"Please tell me they aren't dead!" I yell. No tears for me yet.

Leo quickly taps on the computer, and the trio's vitals come up.

"They aren't dead." Leo gulps. "But..."

"But what?" Leo doesn't answer. "But what, Leo?" I yell, and shake his shoulders.

"They'll be dead if they aren't taken out of that snow and if they don't receive medical help within the next 5 minutes." Leo whispers.

I scream at the top of my lungs, then start sobbing.

"Take her out, Matthew." Mr. Davenport says to my dad. Dad picks me up under my armpits and drags me out of the lab, me kicking and swearing the whole time.

"Let me go, Dad!" I yell, with some other choice words.

"Mellie, stop it. Stop it!"

"I have to help them, Dad! They need my help!"

"You can't do anything to help them, Mellie!" He brings me upstairs and tells Tasha and Eddie to keep an eye on me.

"Tasha, please. You have to let me help them!"

Tasha is sobbing into a pillow, sprawled out on the couch."Mellie, all we can do is wait and pray."

I start pacing the room, trying to think of something to convince Tasha to let me go.

Nothing.

I sit down next to her, defeated. Eventually her sobbing stops and is replaced by slow, steady breathing. She's asleep. I walk over to Eddie.

"Eddie. You have to help me help them."

"No can do, sister." I reach for the doorknob to go outside. "You touch that doorknob, and I'll lock all doors and windows and start the security alarm. It goes like this. BEEP BEEP INTRUDER ALERT BEEP BEEP." Eddie says.

"Eddie, please!"

"Quit your whining!"

"Not until you let me out."

He groans and I hear the click of the lock. "Fine. The door's unlocked."

"Thank you, Eddie."

I run across the Davenport's yard to my own house, grabbing my ski gear. A warm winter coat, gloves, boots, goggles, a helmet, a hat for under the helmet, long underwear and other stuff, equalling to about 10 pounds of warm clothes. I put them all on and sneak back to the Davenports and downstairs to Mr. D's transportation room.

"Eddie?" I ask to the empty room.

I hear his tell-tale groan. "Now what do you want?"

"Can you fly a helicopter?"
