Boys Have Cooties

"Nice party, isn't it?" I turn around to see Chase standing behind me, wearing the white shirt and red tie he was wearing under his graduation gown. I can't believe we graduated today! Since we live next door, the Davenports and my dad decided to through a joint graduation party. It covers both of our backyards.

"Yes, very nice." I say. He takes my hand and leads me to the hammock that is hanging in my backyard and we sit down. I smooth out my Aztec print skirt as I sit down.

"I can't believe we finally graduated." He says.

"I know. And that Adam actually graduated on time!" I say, laughing.

"Yeah! I always thought I'd end up graduating with or before him!" He laughs. He kicks his foot off the ground and rocks the hammock.

"What do we do now?" I ask.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean......college." I sigh. "I wish I could stay here and take online courses like you, but I got a scholarship to Arizona State. And my best friend from Phoenix, Laura, is going there too."

"I want you to go there, Mel. I'd go with you if I could, but I need my capsule." He says.

"I know. But it's not like Phoenix is THAT far away, right? We'll see each other all the time and video chat and talk on the phone and-" I get cut off my Chase kissing me.

"Hey, Mel, relax! It's summer and we're gonna have fun and relax. We aren't going to worry about college!" He says. "And when college comes......well," he pauses. "There is no possible way that I am letting you go." I lean into his shoulder and we sit there in our own little silent world, holding hands and swinging back and forth. I eventually close my eyes.

"Melnie!" I open my eyes, seeing my 5 year old cousin Sera standing in front of Chase and I. She's got my black lab Cardi's leash in her hands.

"Hey, Sera!" I release Chase's hand and sit up straighter. She gives Chase a weird look and then looks back to me. She looks back at Chase and points at him.

"Whooooo aaaaarrrre yoooouuuuu?" She says, spreading her words out.

"I'm Chase Davenport." He says, holding up his hand as in a high five. Sera raises her eyebrow at him and looks to me.

"Where did you get this joker?" She says. I burst out laughing.

"I don't know, Serr!" I laugh, holding out my fist. She bumps it.

"JELLYFISH!" We say. I turn to Chase.

"You gotta do the fist bump with her, Chase." I say.

"So how do you know him, Melnie?" Sera asks.

"He's my boyfriend, Sera." I say. She crinkles her nose.

"Boy? Friend? Eww, boys have cooties, Melnie!" She says. Chase and I laugh.

"Yes, that they do, Serr." I laugh. Aunt Cathy calls Sera and she takes off running. I turn to Chase. "Isn't she hilarious?"

"Yes, very." He says. I laugh, then lean in and kiss him.
