"You're all set now. Try not to throw yourself between another claw fight next time," the nurse sighed, tossing the bloodied bandages into the bin with a soft thunk and peeling off her gloves like she was done with both my arm and my antics.
Louis stood nearby like a statue with attitude, arms crossed and eyes sharp, hovering close as the nurse wrapped my newly stitched wound in thick white gauze. The pull of the bandage stung, but it was nothing compared to the throbbing ache underneath. Once the final wrap was secured and snipped, the nurse gave me a pat on the shoulder that somehow managed to be both sympathetic and exasperated. We were dismissed.
We stepped into the corridor and walked side by side, quiet settling over us. The only sound was our soft footfalls tapping against tile, echoing back at us like hesitant applause. Outside the windows, night had fallen hard. The moon spilled silver across the campus, casting long shadows across the empty halls. No stars, just an endless void, as if the universe had decided to keep its secrets hidden tonight.
I caught Louis watching me in the reflection of the glass, his gaze unreadable, like he was trying to solve a puzzle no one asked him to.
He finally broke the silence. "What exactly were you thinking, throwing yourself between two carnivores mid-maul?"
I let out a low breath. "Legoshi went full beast mode. I did what I had to do to stop him from hurting Bill."
Louis arched a brow, amused. "Bill's a six-foot-three Bengal tiger, and he needed you to save him?" He chuckled, a rare sound that always seemed to come with a touch of disbelief.
"Yeah, Yeah. It was dumb. I know... What the hell got into those two?"
"I'll let Bill explain everything himself." Louis's voice was as crisp. You rarely got more than a sliver of insight out of him unless he wanted to give it.
He held the door open for me, and we stepped into the Drama Club room. It was empty, eerily so. Everyone had probably already retreated to their dorms, leaving the space hollow and silent. Louis guided me toward his office at the back of the room, a quiet place tucked away when privacy was necessary and truth was unavoidable.
Moonlight spilled in through the tall office window, casting pale light across the small space and the two guilty-looking figures waiting inside.
Bill stood up immediately, eyes wide. "Y/n, I—" He paused, tongue caught on the knot of whatever confession he'd been practicing. His gaze dropped to my bandaged arm, then flicked to my face. When I tried to offer a reassuring smile he looked away, ashamed.
"Look, I'm fine," I said gently, trying to take the edge off the tension. "It's just a scratch. Besides, he's the one who forgot he had claws." I nodded toward Legoshi, who looked like he was trying not to crumple in on himself.
The tall wolf shot up from his chair like it had shocked him. "Y/n, I'm so sorry! I don't know what I was thinking! I didn't mean to hurt you."
"I told you, I'm fine," I repeated, waving my good arm and doing my best to look convincingly unbothered. "Just a scratch."
Which was a bit of a lie. But right now, guilt was hurting them both more than the actual wound was hurting me.
"It's not just a scratch, Y/n. You needed eighteen stitches," Louis said flatly, arms crossed and tone sharp enough to slice tension clean in half.
Bill and Legoshi both flinched like the number alone had hurt them more than the sight of my bleeding arm ever did.
I shrugged and forced a grin. "Could've been worse."
