"Bill!"
He glanced up at me, that familiar gentle smile tugging at his lips. "Hey, princess. Your prince came to the rescue," he joked, tossing his shirt my way. Not even a heartbeat later, the lion was on his feet again and charging straight at Bill.
"Bill! Look out!" I screamed.
Bill spun just in time to meet the lion's assault head-on.
"Put my uniform on! Sorry if it smells sweaty!" he shouted over the chaos, exchanging brutal blows with the lion.
"Why are you here? You could've died! Why would you do that?" Tears welled up, blurring my vision.
"A lot of reasons. I'll tell you later."
"You're an idiot!"
I hurriedly pulled his uniform over my trembling body.
Bill crouched before me, a shield between the savage lion and myself. My heart slammed against my ribs as the two wrestled fiercely, crashing across the hardwood floor. Suddenly, the lion clamped its jaws down on Bill's arm. He howled in pain, struggling desperately to pry free from the crushing grip.
"Bill!" I cried out, panic choking my voice.
"Y/n! Hurry, get the hell out of here! Run!" Bill shouted, his once white shirt now soaked crimson with his blood.
"I can't do that! I'm not leaving you!" I cried, my voice cracking with desperation.
Bill growled, digging his knee hard into the lion's jaw and wrenching his arm free. He stumbled back, breathing heavy and ragged, wiping the blood from his nose with the back of his hand.
"Well, this isn't going anywhere," the lion snarled, rubbing his bloodied jaw. "How about we finish this, kid? Right here, right now."
"Yeah? Sounds good to me!" Bill bared his fangs, stealing a glance at me. His smile was forced but warm. "You should look away. This might not be something you want to see. I'm sorry, Y/n."
He turned, fists raised.
Shit, shit, shit.
They lunged at each other again, fiercer than before. Teeth sank into flesh, ripping, blood splattering wildly across the floor.
Panic rising, I scanned frantically for something, anything to help. Then, glinting just a few feet away, I saw it: a gun. It must've fallen during the fight.
I took a deep breath and bolted.
"How the fuck do you use one of these?" I muttered, fumbling with the gun in my hands. Screw it. I tightened my grip, raised it, and aimed.
But I never got the chance to pull the trigger.
Bill was already on him, a blur of stripes and fury. His fangs sank deep into the lion's shoulder, then his throat. A sickening crunch echoed through the room. It was over.
I dropped the gun and ran to him, my heart pounding as if trying to escape my chest. Bill stood over the old lion's body, his breath ragged, the blood of the lions mixed with his own, dripping from his mouth.
He staggered over to me and dropped to his knees at my feet, his breathing uneven and shallow. I fell to the floor with him and wrapped my arms around his broad, shaking frame. He held me like I was the last real thing in the world.
"I'm... so glad I got to you in time," he whispered into my shoulder, voice frayed and full of everything he hadn't had time to say. "It's all going to be okay now."
His broken smile carved its way into my chest, matching the shattered beat of my heart. Tears spilled freely, hot and endless, soaking the tattered remains of his shirt. Still, despite the pain painting his face, he pushed himself up to his feet, one arm pressed hard to the bleeding gash at his side.
