"Wakey wakey!" Calliope's voice echoed through the room as she flipped on every light and yanked open all the curtains, even the ones draping our beds. Bright sunlight poured in, stabbing at our tired eyes. Groans erupted from every corner as I buried my face in my pillow.
A frustrated sigh followed her footsteps thundering toward me. In one swift move, the deer snatched my pillow away and yanked me out of bed. I landed on the floor with a dull thud, groaning again.
"Why? Why do you hate me?" I wailed dramatically, only to yawn immediately after. Calliope just laughed and gave me a gentle kick with her foot. "Come on, get up! If you don't move now, you'll be late!"
"How are you so energetic this early?" Anya mumbled, still half asleep.
"Good morning, everyone! I brought coffee!" Iris appeared, handing out steaming cups we all gratefully gulped down.
Within ten minutes, we'd dressed, brushed teeth, fixed hair, and grabbed our stuff. Then we slipped out of the dorm and headed to the dining hall.
Once inside, I slipped away from the group and snagged the strawberry shortcake I'd been craving since last night. I decided to stroll outside and enjoy it on a bench in the courtyard.
Just as I took my first bite, I bumped into something hard and fluffy.
"Oh shit, sorry! Didn't see you there," I said, my words muffled by the bite of cake still in my mouth. I'd accidentally bumped into a tiny snow-white bunny, who was rubbing the back of her head where we'd collided. Her nose twitched, and she shot me a sharp glare.
I held out my free hand to help her up, but she declined, standing up on her own and brushing dirt off her skirt.
That's when I noticed the mattress she was dragging into the dorm, dirty and heavy-looking, the kind that didn't exactly seem like it was easy to move. Honestly, I had no idea how it ended up out here in the first place.
"Need a hand with that?" I asked, nodding toward the grimy mattress lying on the ground.
"No thanks. I got it," she snapped, hoisting it up again and starting to drag it forward.
I sighed, reaching down to grab it from her. Considering how tiny she was, the mattress was pretty light for me to lift.
"What are you doing?!" she yelled.
"Helping. Watching you struggle with that thing is honestly kind of depressing."
"I'm not helpless! I can manage just fine."
"So, where exactly am I supposed to haul this thing?" I asked, tuning out her protests.
She sighed like I was the biggest pain. "Second floor, third door on the left."
I flashed her a quick smile and lugged the mattress up the stairs, navigating the cramped hallway until we reached her room. Stepping inside, I took in the mess: dresses and clothes tossed over desks, beds that looked like they hadn't seen a blanket in days.
I helped her get the mattress settled on the top bunk, where it clearly belonged. Then my eyes caught a small squirrel girl sitting cross-legged on her bed, fully absorbed in a crossword puzzle. When she noticed me, she paused, giving me a look that mixed skepticism with a dash of 'Who even invited you?'
"Oh? And who's this, Haru's guest?" she asked, voice dripping with a kind of icy politeness.
"I didn't know you entertained girls, Haru. Much less humans," she added with a sneer disguised as a giggle.
"Uh... what?" I blinked, caught completely off guard.
"I don't. She offered to help me with the mattress. You could've stopped them, you know?" Haru replied, visibly upset.
