Apparently this is what happens when you're in the mood to write Prodigal Son fic while listening to nothing but the Lord of the Rings soundtrack....

I would've put this in my Prodigal Son one-shots book, but I think it fits better in here since it's technically a crossover.

Enjoy!

Malcolm thinks he might be an outlier amongst most hobbits. He's not really big on parties, or eating as much as other hobbits, but when practically all of the Shire is invited to the 111th birthday party for one Bilbo Baggins, it seems silly of him to be the only hobbit in the entire Shire not to attend. Plus, if he didn't show up he has a feeling someone would turn up at his hobbit hole and drag him along to partake in the festivities, so to save Gil or anyone else from wasting their time by turning up at his home, he decided to just turn up on his own accord.

But he won't lie, as he sits around sipping at his mug of ale, he's actually enjoying himself. Though he's not going to go and dance, not really his thing. He's content with sitting back and watching everyone else have fun. Though as he spots his friend and crush, Dani Powell dancing with Rosie Cotton, looking as beautiful as ever, he feels a slight tugging at his heart to go and ask her for a dance. But maybe that's just the ale talking.

Malcolm sets his drink down on the table as he spots his friend, Frodo Baggins making his way over to him after having pushed Samwise Gamgee over towards Rosie Cotton. He supposes Frodo had persuaded his friend to go ask Rosie for a dance. It's no surprise to most hobbits that Sam has a crush on Rosie Cotton. And Malcolm won't deny that she's gorgeous, but he only has eyes for Dani Powell. Only, he's too afraid to ask her out, or even ask her for a dance as a friend.

"Malcolm!" Frodo says, almost jumping down onto the empty seat next to Malcolm. "It's good to see you out and about for once!"

Malcolm laughs a little, shaking his head. "Thought I might as well turn up before someone comes and drags me here." He says, eyes drifting over to where Dani is now dancing with Edrisa Tanaka.

And it seems Frodo notices who's captured his attention, as he wraps an arm around his shoulders. "Why don't you ask Dani for a dance?"

Malcolm looks up at him, laughing as he grabs his drink, taking a long drink as he shakes his head, "I'm not really one for dancing."

Though while he's not one for dancing, he does feel an urge to ask her for a dance. And maybe he should, if he wasn't so afraid. Dani is a pretty feisty hobbit after all. Maybe after he's had a few more drinks he'll go ask her for a dance. If he doesn't end up slipping away back to his hobbit hole before then....

"Go on, Malcolm. I'm sure Dani is just waiting for you to ask her." Frodo says. "Just go ask her before someone else does, and you miss your chance."

Well, Malcolm certainly doesn't want to miss his chance of being with her. But he's scared to ask her. They've been good friends for a long time now, and what if she doesn't like him anymore than a friend, and their friendship is ruined because of his silly crush on her. She's been with him through everything after his father died, and he doesn't want what they have now to be ruined.

But at the same time, he really wants to be more than friends. He's just afraid that she doesn't want the same thing.

"You're worried she doesn't feel the same way." Frodo comments.

Malcolm just nods, sighing. That's exactly what he's worried about. And he'd rather not find out if his worries are correct. He'd rather save himself the hurt.
