It was a busy day at the Quarry. Bill, Ben, Marion and Timothy were hard at work all day.
One day, Thomas was bringing some stone to the quarry. When he got there, he couldn't find Bill or Ben. He waited for them. Then Marion came up.
"Oh, hello Thomas!" she said. "Did I ever tell you about the team I dug up a dinosaur skeleton?"
"Please tell me, Marion." said Thomas.
Before Marion could speak, Thomas suddenly heard a noise on both sides of him.
"Boo!!" said two voices.
Thomas shook. "Bust my buffers! What was that?!"
Bill and Ben emerged from either side of him, laughing.
Thomas was cross. "Not again! You could have caused an accident with your foolishness!" he scolded.
"We were only saying hello!" laughed Bill.
Thomas didn't think that was fun. he dropped his load and left.
Bill and Ben were laughing. They were so busy laughing, neither of them were watching what they were doing. Up ahead, there was a fork ahead and the line Ben was on was about to end. Their drivers knew what was going to happen, and jumped clear.
BUMP! Both of twins bumped into each other and derailed.
"Ow!" cried Bill.
"Not again!" said Ben.
Luckily, no one was hurt. But Bill and Ben's buffers were dented.
Later, Harvey the crane engine came to lift the twins back on the track, and Sir Topham Hatt was on board. He was cross. "You two have caused confusion and delay! If you two would stop playing around, and get your work done, this wouldn't have happened! You must go to the Steamworks and get repaired."
The twins sighed.
"Yes, sir." said Bill quietly.
"Sorry, sir." whisperer Ben.
Bull and Ben went to the Steamworks. Victor was waiting for them.
"Hello, you two. I've been expecting you. I believe you're here to be repaired?"
Bill winked at Ben. They were going to trick Victor.
"Oh, no, Victor." said Bill. "We're here to be repainted. Thomas and Percy are here to be repaired. Sir Topham Hatt got confused. We'll go get them!"
"Oh, no, you don't!" said Victor. ""You're trying to trick me. Sir Topham Hatt had me to make sure you don't play any tricks on me."
The twins groaned.
Soon, they got their buffers repaired. But before they left, Victor pointed out,
"Your nameplates are dirty. Why don't you stay here and get the cleaned?"
A workman took their nameplates off and cleaned them.
Bill and Ben were starting to get bored.
Finally, the workman was finished cleaning. However, the workman was confused. He wasn't sure which engine was Bill and which was Ben. And they didn't have numbers to tell them apart. So the workman out Bill's nameplate on Ben and Ben's nameplate on Bill.
At last, Bill and Ben left the Steamworks. But Bill noticed something wasn't right.
"Ben, what are you doing with my nameplate?"
"What are you doing with my nameplate?"
"Oh no!" cried Bill, "The workman must have confused me for you and put the wrong nameplate! We must go back!"
So the twins went back.
"Victor!" cried Ben. "The workman got us confused and gave us the wrong nameplates!"
"Is this another one of your tricks?" .
"We're serious!" said Bill. "It's true!"
"Shouldn't you two be working instead of trying to trick other engines?" said Victor politely.
Bill and Ben left the Steamwoeks. Bill was cross. However, Ben was happy.
"Look at us!" he said excitedly. "Now everyone will think I'm you, and you're me!"
Bill and Ben got back to the quarry and finished their jobs. When they were done, Timothy come up.
"You two must take some stone to Brendam Docks. Thry need a huge shipment." And he left.
Bill and Ben got their trucks ready. Bill got in front but then Ben said,
"What are you doing?"
"What are you talking about?" snapped Bill. "I always go up front."
"I'm sorry, Ben, but you always go behind meand I always go up front."
"No you don't!" argued Bill.
"He's right, Ben." said Marion, who was digging up some dirt nearby."
Bill rolled his eyes and signed. So he got up behind Bill, and Ben gleefully went up front.
Ben enjoyed being up front. He liked liked the wind going in his face. But bill didn't like being a back engine one bit.
They delivered the stone on time.
Later, at the quarry, Timothy had a message from Sir Topham Hatt.
"Bill, you must take some passengers on a tour of the quarry. Pick them up at Knapford Station."
Bill excitedly went forward but Ben stopped him.
"What are you doing, Ben? I'm supposed to take the train. You stay here."
"Don't be silly, I'm supposed to take the train." And Bill went off. Bill came to Knapford to pick up the coaches (Two red branchline coaches and people can be seen on the platform.) Sir Topham Hatt was surprised to see him.
"Ben, what are you doing here?" he asked. "I asked for Bill."
"But, I'm Bill, sir." said Ben. "We got our nametags switched at the Steamworks."
"Ben, I do not think Victor would swicth you nameplates on purpose. Go and get Ben at once."
"But, Sir-" protested Ben.
"No buts!" said Sir Topham Hatt. "Get him now."
Ben sulked back to the quarry. Bill was laughing.
"Sir Topham Hatt didn't believe you? How foolish!" Bill went to get his train.
A few days later, Timothy noticed something wasn't right with the twins.
"Bill, Ben, did you get your nameplates switched at the Steamworks?"
Bill and Ben were surprised.
"How did you figure it out?"
"When Ben left, he had a scratch on his buffer, and it couldn't be possible, you got it, Bill."
Bill couldn't believe Timothy believed him.
Later, Timothy went to the Steamworks to explain to Victor what happened.
"It was my fault, my friend." said Victor, "I thought they were going to trick me. I'll go fix it at once."
Bill and Ben when to the Steamworks later to get their nameplates corrected.
"I'm sorry, I didn't listen to you two." said Victor.
"That's quite all right, Victor." smiled Bill.
"And I'm sorry I took your place in up front." said Ben to Bill.
"That's all right, Ben." said Bill. "I think we learned a lesson today."
"What's that?"
"We should always listen to each other."
They both agreed and were glad things were back to normal.
