One day, James was waiting for Percy at Maithewaite Station. He was cross.
"We're late! Where is Percy?!" he grumbled. "he should have been ten minutes ago!"
At last, Percy puffed in.
"Where have you been, Percy?" snapped James.
"I'm sorry, James!" Percy peeped. "I've been re-routed! My line was closed for maintenance and repairs!"
"Just find a quicker route so you won't be late again!" said James.
Percy's passengers climbed aboard James. Percy left.

At the end of the line, Percy took his three coaches to the coach depot. He kept thinking about what James had said.
"I do need to find a new route." he thought. "Maybe if I ask someone, they'll help!" And he set off
Meanwhile, Thomas and Edward were shunting freight cars in the shunting yard.
But Thomas' line of trucks were being troublesome.
"Keep quiet and still you silly trucks!" snapped Thomas.
"Thomas, be careful with them," warned Edward. "They're extra troublesome today!"
Just then, Percy puffed in.
"I'll ask Thomas and Edward!" thought Percy.
Thomas shunted the last line into place.
"Well done, Thomas!" said Edward.
Then, they saw Percy.

"Hello, Percy!" said Edward.
"Hi, Thomas, Edward," said Percy. "I need your help. My route I usually take to deliver my passengers to James is closed down for maintenance and won't be open until next week. I need to a new route to Maithewaite Station."
Thomas and Edward knew where to go.
"Follow us, Percy!

Thomas and Edward took Percy along the mainline.
"All right, Percy,"said Edward. when you pass this bridge, look for the third switch and it'll be a shortcut to the station."
Percy paid close attention.

The next morning, Percy took the new route. He picked up his passengers from Knapford Station, and headed to Maithewaite station just as James was pulling in. James was surprised to see him.
"Percy, how did you manage to get here on time?"
"I took a new route!" said Percy.
For the next few days, Percy made it Maithewaite Station on time.

But one day, Percy was on his way to Knapford Station, he came to a faulty switch. The points were set to the main line, but when he approached it, he was diverted on a siding.
"Bust my buffers!" peeped Percy. "I'm on the wrong track!"
Percy roled along the track. Then there was trouble, Percy was going so fast, he hit a buffer and and came off the rails.
Luckily, no one was hurt.
"Oh, no!" squeaked Percy. "James is going to be cross!"
Percy was right. James was at Maithewaite Station. He was cross.
"...seven, eight, nine, ten! This is the fourth time I counter to ten and Percy's not here!"
Meanwhile, Edward was steaming along the same line. He looked ahead and saw steam in the distance.
"That's strange." Edward said and he went to go investigate.
Edward followed it. Then he saw a coach in his way. He stopped.
'"Percy? Is that you?" he asked.
"Edward!" Percy peeped, thank goodness you're here! I need your help. If I don't pick up my passengers from Knapford and take them to Maithewaite on time, James will be cross! could you help me?"
Edward was happy to help. "Of course, Percy!"
Edward was coupled to Percy's coaches. He promised to send help for Percy.

Edward went to Knapford to pick the passengers up and then he hurried to Maithewaite.
Meanwhile, James was getting impatient. "That's it! I'm leaving!" He began to chuff away. But the driver looked behind, he saw steam in the distance. He thought it was Percy.
"James, wait!" he said. "Percy's here!" But James didn't listen.
But, it wasn't Percy. It was Edward. He came in the station and saw James leave.
"Stop! Come back, James!" called Edward. But James was gone.
"Oh, dear!" sighed Edward. "Now what will we do?"
"We can try to catch James." said the driver.
Edward was determined. "We'll do it!"
So Edward left the station and raced off.
"We'll catch James or bust!"
Edward flew through crossings, rattled under bridges and raced past The Search and Rescue Center. Edward raced up Gordon's Hill.
"Oh, dear. This must be how Bertie felt when he chased me when I left with the passengers!" he huffed, remembering his experience.
Whem he got to the top, he saw James in the distance, he had made it down the hill.
"There he is!" cried Edward. He sped down the hill.
Edward was getting closer and closer to James. "Nearly there.." Edward panted. Then the signal turned red. Edward had to stop.
"Oh, no! Now I'll never catch up to James!" Edward said as he came to a halt.
Edward waited and waited. The passengers were worried. The conductor served them tea in the dining car.
Finally the signal turned green. "Hurrah!" cried Edward and sped off.

James was at Wellsworth Station. Then, at last Edward caught up to him.
James was surprised to see Edward.
"Edward?" he said. "What are you doing here? And where's Percy?"
Edward explained what happened. James was surprised.
"Oh no!" he cried. Then, Sir Topham Hatt came. He was cross with James. "James," he said sternly. "You caused confusion and delay. You must wait for the the next train no matter how late they are!"
James' face was as red as his paintwork. "I'm sorry sir."

Edward's passenger disembarked him.
James to spoke to Edward. "I'm sorry I left your train behind."
"It's all right, James!" Edward smiled.
"Then Sir Topham Hatt spoke to them.
"Connor and Caitlin are at the Steamworks getting their worn parts fixed. You two must fill in for them by taking their passengers from Ulfstead Castle to the Mainland."
James had an idea. "You were really fast, catching up to me like that, Edward. Why don't we race to Ulfstead Castle?"
Edward like that idea. "You're on, James!"
James and Edward got their coaches ready.
"Ready?" said Edward.
"Go!" said James!
With a wheesh, Edward and James left Wellsworth Statio and headed to Ulfstead Castle.

The next day, Percy was back at work. His line was repaired and was on time meeting James at Maithewaite Station.
"It's good to be back!" he peeped.
"You can say that again!" said James.
