Sorry this is late
I got sick and have been sick for the last 5 days
I took a covid test yesterday, hopefully this is nothing but a flu

Now we shall begin....
The 10th day of Muharram, the Day of Ashura

I highly suggest watching the videos provided

Ashura marks the day of the death of Imam Hussain (as), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh/as)

Imam Hussain Ibn Ali was killed in the battle of Karbala
It was his dignified stand for social justice

Now origins/history/the beginning
In order to understand Ashura we must understand who and how the battle started
The Battle of Karbala

So, we will start with that and the first night of Muharram

Who is the enemy?
Yazid, the son of Mu'awiyah

Hassan Ibn Ali succeeded his father, Imam Ali (as) and took the title of Caliph
Hassan Ibn Ali, brother of Hussain, signed a peace treaty with Mu'awiyah to avoid further bloodshed after the assassination of Imam Ali (as), his father

The treaty stated that Mu'awiyah would be given the title of Caliph, the condition being that Mu'awiya be a just ruler and that he would not establish a dynasty.
And that after he dies, either Hassan or Hussain (as) would be next Caliph

After Hassan Ibn Ali (as) died (killed by Mu'awiyah), his younger brother Hussain Ibn Ali  (as) became head of their clan.

The Umayyad caliph Mu'awiyah nominated his son, Yazid as his successor, breaching the peace treaty.

Yazid demanded an allegiance with Husain ibn Ali (as),
But Husain declined, seeing as the peace treaty was broken, and said "Yazid is a person who kills people without cause, and an individual like me doesn't pledge allegiance to someone like him"

Husain didn't give allegiance and traveled to Mecca.
The people of Kufa proposed for Husain (as) to overthrow the Umayyads (Yazid and his people)

Husain (as) headed with about 70 men to Kufa where he was intercepted by 1000 strong army of the Caliph
He was forced to head north and camp in the plains of Karbala, where a larger Umayyad army of 4000 will arrive soon afterwards

The Umayyad governed refused Hussain (as) safe passage without submitting to his authority, a condition declined by Husain (as).

The first night of Muharram ^ the day Hussain ibn Ali (as) camps in Karbala and Yazid's army of 4,000 camps out near the Euphrates River, blocking them from getting water

The day of Ashura is the day Imam Hussain (as) is killed

I will be posting about the 10 days before that, the days his companions, brothers, and sons were all killed

And then of Imam Hussain (as)'s death
