"Mama D?" Nini asked, shocked to see her mom standing in her driveway. "Wh- what are you doing here?" She asked, walking closer to her as Dana made her way down her daughter's driveway to meet her half way.Nini quickly looked back to see a very nervous Ricky slowly walking up behind her. "Well I just wanted to make a surprise visit because I missed you and I had the weekend off." The older brunette said before glancing at Ricky and furrowing her eyebrows.
"Where's Ej, honey?" Nini swore she could hear Ricky mumbling something but couldn't make it out. "Oh, uh... come inside and I'll explain." She said as they all walked towards the house. Nini unlocked the door and Dana made a beeline for the bathroom, claiming that she's been holding it for hours. Nini turned to a frozen Ricky and grabbed his hand, squeezing lightly. "You okay?" She asked softly. Ricky let out a breath he didn't know he was holding and shook his head. "Neens, this definitely isn't how I planned on meeting your moms- or one of them at least. God only knows what she thinks of me! Plus, she doesn't even know that you and that douche nozzle broke up! Wha- "
"Douche nozzle?" The petite girl interrupted him, raising her eyebrows in amusement.
"Nini!" Ricky dragged out, in slight panic. The brunette sighed and wrapped her hands around his neck, leaning up to peck his lips, effectively calming him down. "It'll be okay. I just haven't had a chance to tell her because everything has been so hectic. I'm sure she'll love you. I do." She told him as she trailed her hands down to rest on his chest. "Just relax."
Ricky let out a deep breath, leading him and his favorite brunette into the kitchen, filling up three glasses of water while they waited for Dana to join. "So, where's Ej, hun?"The older woman asked, glancing back at a still nervous Ricky. Nini cleared her throat and stood besides her boyfriend, interlacing their hands and setting it on the counter for Dana to see.
"Mom, Ej and I broke up a little while ago and this is Ricky... my boyfriend." Nini said, glancing between her two favorite people. "What?" Dana questioned in shock. Nini shrugged. "We've changed, mom. We're not the same people we were six years ago. Plus, he's not the person I thought he was. He proposed but I said no because the connection wasn't there anymore and I'll be honest and say that during that time, I was falling in love for Ricky. Things just went downhill for us, but mama D, I love Ricky. I really do. And I know you'll love him too." I said, slightly frowning at the memory of how things ended between Ej and I.
"It's a pleasure to meet you Mrs. Salazar-Roberts." Ricky said, shaking Dana's hand.
"The pleasure is all mine, dear." Dana smiled back. "And please, cut the formalities. It's Dana." She said. Ricky smiled, finally letting out a breath of air he didn't realize he was holding. He sat down on a stool next to the two women, smiling at his girlfriend as she caught up with her mom. Suddenly, Dana turned to Ricky, "So, Ricky, may I ask you what do you do for a living?" She asked.
"Oh, um I'm a private surfing instructor and I help out at my mom's cafe where Neens works." He replied. "Surfing lessons? That's it?" Dana asked, again. "Yeah. I love it and you know what they say... it's not a job if it's something you love to do." Ricky said, sounding more nervous.
"I assume that isn't a very high paying job?" Dana said. Nini sighed, knowing where her mom was going with this. Ricky felt his girlfriend tense up beside him and he swallowed, nervously for what felt like the tenth time that night. "It usually just depends on the lessons and everything, but because I'm a private instructor, I tend to make more than the average. And I also make a decent amount in tips." He said. "Look, Dana, I know it's not what you were expecting, but I make enough to live comfortably and give your daughter anything she needs. I can promise you that." He said, kissing Nini on the cheek.
"Nini, I'm guessing Ej cut you off? He was your financial stability. Do you really think you can live in this big house. in Los Angeles no less, on a waitressing salary?" The older brunette asked, worriedly. Nini shrugged. "I'll figure it out, mama D." She said, growing more annoyed. Dana nodded quietly before looking back and forth between the pair.
"Are you sure about that? This is why you should of stayed in Salt-" Dana began, but Nini quickly cut her mother off. "For the love of god, mom! I wasn't happy there! I'm happy here, okay? Isn't that enough for you yet?" She asked, frustrated.
"I want you to be happy, honey but I don't want you to let good opportunities slip from your fingers." Dana said, reasonably. "I believe that I've made all the correct choices, thank you very much. I'm the happiest I've been in a long time, mom, but if you're just going to insult the way I live my life, then please just leave!" Nini exclaimed.
"Fine honey, but don't come crying to me when you don't have enough money to live off of and when your surfer boyfriend won't be able help you out either!" Dana yelled back, grabbing her things as the three walked down the hallway. "Don't you dare pull Ricky into this! He's got a great job that he loves, and a woman that he loves. That's all we care about." Nini said, opening the front door, Dana walking out in front of it. "I'll call you later, Nini. I truly hope for your sake you figure something out because your mom and I won't be the ones who help you." She said before shutting the door.
"Dammit!" The small girl yelled in frustration before Ricky rushed to her side, pulling her gently into his arms. "Hey, shh... it's alright, you're right." The curly haired main said, soothingly.
"I just don't understand why she gets like that! I never asked her for her help. Ever. I don't know why she thinks that I'm not capable of doing it on my own." Nini said, shakily as tears threatened to fall from her eyes. Ricky sighed, kissing her forehead. "I don't know why she thinks that babe, but we know what we can handle. I know you're more than capable of affording this house on your own." Nini smiled up at him and took a deep breath. "Well, now you've met my mom- or one of them at least!" She mused as they walked back into the kitchen. Ricky threw his head back and groaned. "Yeah, well that's not how I wanted to! I'm sure she thinks pretty low of me." He said. Nini turned around so they were face to face. "No she doesn't... she just can't see past what her idea of success is." Nini said.
"You sure? Because if I'm ever going to want to talk to her again, I think I'd want her to like me." Ricky said as they cleared the dishes from earlier. Nini knit her eyebrows in confusion."Why would you want to talk to her again?" She asked as she put the final dishes away. Ricky looked panicked momentarily before he cleared his throat. "Uh... no reason! Anyway let's get on with that lazy evening of ours!" He said, grabbing some ice cream from the freezer.
We sat down on the couch snuggling, kissing, and just enjoying each other's company as we binged Netflix movies.
