Keith's POV

As Ambassador Coran said, a trail began in the afternoon. Knights of the highest honor, aside from the knights of Voltron, were gathered in the arena to take turns seating in the Black Lion in hopes of finding a successor.

Up first were the knights of Voltron. Lance insisted he be the first to ride the Black Lion, thus it was granted.

I dreaded my turn. Shiro had meant for me to fly the Black Lion if anything happened to me, but I flew the Black Lion once. Once! It was years ago. Who knows if the Black Lion would even respond to me now. I'd rather skip all of this, because I have to search for Shiro not to mention I'm a ward now.

Lance's POV

I'm ready. I'm ready. I've trained. I've worked out. I've done pushups a few sit ups, a few squats. I'm ready for this. I'm qualified.

Hunk stood beside me looking up at the Black Lion. It sat in the arena, powered down waiting to be awakened by a new paladin. A new Paladin to take up the mantel and be the new head of Voltron. I'm excited, more curious. Hunk looked scared, I think.

"Hunk, are you alright buddy?"

"Um, not sure." Hunk replied, before gulping "Do you think it's dump to be intimidated by a mechanical weaponized lion?" He said with a slow laugh.

"Hunk, it's just like the yellow lion."

"Yeah but it's bigger. A lot bigger and scary. Look at it!"

"I am, what I see is a chance to be the leader of Voltron and the head." I replied.

"Yeah well, I see a lion that is scary and big and NOT the yellow lion. The yellow lion is cozy and I feel safe."

"It's starting to sound like you don't want to leave the yellow lion."

"How can I. Yellow, He's, my baby." Hunk said.

"Don't worry Hunk." Pidge said walking up, "There's a bunch of knights here. You are bonded to the Yellow lion and are a good fit. I wouldn't worry about you changing lions."

"Why do you sat that?" I asked. "Do you think you are going to pilot the Black Lion?"

"No. I'm only pointing out that there are a lot of knights. It's a greater possibility that one of them will pilot the Black Lion than any one of us. The Black Lion will pick who he believes should pilot it and be the head of Voltron." Pidge said. There was something about the way she hesitated to speak that made me curious.

Pidge's POV

I haven't told anyone what was discussed in that room and it's killing me. I usually tell Hunk everything or in some cases Lance. But Hunk would tell everyone. I'm worried for Lance. Here he is getting excited thinking he's going to pilot the Black Lion when, I'm not sure he will. No, I know he won't.

Yes, there's a chance other knights could pilot the Black Lion, but neither seem to be leader worthy. Shiro was like a brother to Keith, teaching him raising him. Keith is like Shiro's first officer. Of all the knights of Voltron who could replace Shiro, I'm willing to bet on Keith. Not just because he piloted the Black Lion once but because in many ways Keith is like Shiro, even if he can't see it himself.

I'm just concerned on how Lance will react when he finds out.

Keith's POV

I stood beside Pidge as the Knights of Voltron lined up aside each other before the Black Lion. The order would go in the way we stood. Lance would go first followed by Hunk, then Pidge and I followed last. If neither of us were picked, the knights would be next. Ater lining up it was then Ambassador Coran stood to speak.
