Morning light spilled softly across the bedroom, warm and unhurried as I stretched my arms to find myself alone in the master bed. I looked over the empty side of the bed. I tugged his pillow closer, snuggling my face into it. His scent still lingering in those fabric. It's been two days since he left for Italy and I came back home.
I reached for the night stand, grabbing my phone I dailed the first contact in the call log.
" Good morning. " His perky voice opposite to my sleep laced morning wish.
" Why are you so active in the morning. " I yawned lazily.
" It's 7 in the morning here, I just came from my morning run. " I glanced at the clock - 10:30 am.
" Oh, I slept in late. " I muttered in realisation.
" Couldn't sleep at night without me, wifey? " His tone teasing.
I leaned back against the headboard, "Don't get ahead of yourself. I'm just not used to this silence... " I paused and finished the sentence. " Without you. "
" Careful Naira, You are starting to sound dangerously attached." His soft chuckle made my chest feel lighter.
I rolled my eyes, even though he couldn't see me. "Please. If anything, I'm just adjusting to your constant presence. It's called a habit."
"Habit?" he repeated, tone dipping slightly. "So if I stay gone a little longer, you'll forget me?"
My fingers stilled against the phone. Forget him?
"Shouldn't you be working?" I deflected.
"Shouldn't you be missing your husband?" he countered smoothly.
I let out a quiet huff. "You're impossible." "And yet," his voice dropped just enough to make my stomach flip, "you called me first thing in the morning."
I opened my mouth- Then closed it.
" I was just testing if you are true to your promises." I said, recovering quickly. " I'll always be available on call, Naira. " I mimicked the promise he made before we parted in the airport.
" Sure. " I could mentally visualise the way his lips curve into a teasing smirk. " So You don't miss me ?"
I miss him. More than I should.
But why would I ever admit that to him, this easily.
Before I could respond, the doorbell rang, sharp and perfectly timed.
