During this hour of the day, the setting sun bled through the expansive French windows, drowning the living room in hues of warm gold and honeyed amber. It was my favorite view in this sprawling penthouse.
But that night, the drapes hung heavy, choked tight against the glass. No warm light broke through. There was only the suffocating shadow of the room, and the cold, creeping realization that the dark wasn't just outside. It had found its way inside my home.
Raghav Malhotra.
I walked away before he could spew shit, something he was exceptionally talented at. He was the last person I would believe.
Yet the arrogant jerk showed up in the front yard effortlessly, like a devil slipping through the cracks of my sanctuary.
"I know you are insane, but are you this stupid!" I spat, crossing my arms in front of my chest.
The guards down at the gates must have alerted Kartik already. "My husband will be walking through the door any minute now."
Raghav dismissed me with a roll of his eyes and walked past me leisurely. "You haven't changed at all. Still naive. It's about time you knew a little history about our family."
He dropped into the plush couch and crossed his legs as he tilted his face in my direction. I stared at him, my eyebrows drawn together in confusion.
"Years ago, Ajay Basu, our grandfather, died in a fatal accident saving his best friend, Karan Oberoi. Your dear husband's grandfather.
Bet you didn't know they were best friends. No wonder your husband didn't tell you."
I maintained a stoic face, even though I was starting to feel this wasn't going to go well.
"So, feeling indebted, he cared for our family. But within a few years, when the elder son of Ajay Basu died leaving behind his only little daughter, orphaned, Karan Oberoi added a conditional clause in his Will."
Raghav leaned forward, his lips curving into a slow smirk like he was going to drop his secret weapon. "Oh, come on, babygirl, weren't you curious to know why a wealthy stranger proposed to you out of nowhere?"
I bit the insides of my cheeks as I glared at him. Raghav, now on his feet, walked around me like a predator circling a prey.
"Don't worry, I have the answer." He chuckled darkly. " The executive powers of the multi-billion-dollar Oberoi company will remain in the hands of the Oberoi's only if you, Naira Basu, granddaughter of Ajay Basu, become the daughter-in-law of the Oberoi family."
I froze, the sheer absurdity of his words locking the air in my lungs.
He blew a low whistle as he stepped in front of me. "He didn't need any bride. His eyes were set on you because you were his lottery ticket."
