"Please don't leave me here."

When Emerson walked back into her house later that morning she immediately knew something was wrong. The whole house was dark and quiet, the way it usually was in the middle of the night. This time of day the house would smell like whatever breakfast Addison decided to cook up and there'd be sounds of conversations coming from the dining room, but not today.

"Mom? Dad?" Emerson called out as she quietly closed the front door. "Is anyone home?" She asked, but there was no reply.

Emerson walked into the kitchen and her eyes widened. The place was a mess, there were old pots and dishes sitting in the sink and food left out on the counter. Throughout her entire life Emerson had never seen the kitchen in such disarray.

"What the..." She whispered.

"You're home," A voice said, causing Emerson to let out a scream. She turned around, finding Carter walking into the kitchen. It was clear that he was drunk, the whiskey in his hand being a dead giveaway. "Why's your hair all wet?"

"I-" Emerson paused for a moment, "I went swimming," she answered then Carter nodded, not questioning her further. "Daddy?" Emerson took a cautious step forwards, still confused by the kitchen situation. "What's going on? Where is everyone?"

"Your mother," He began after clearing his throat, "is having an affair." He announced but of course Emerson knew this. "I tried to live with it Emmy, I really did, but I can't anymore. I can't live in this house and see her everyday and pretend like nothing happened."

"Dad-"

"I have some business I need to take care of," Carter said after clearing his throat. "Ward and I are very close to finishing this project we have, and once it's done... I-I'm leaving."

"Wh-" Emerson could feel the tears wanting to form in her eyes and she knew that in a moment or two she wouldn't be able to control them. "Where are you going?"

"For now I'll be staying at the hotel until the end of the week," He told her. "But I need to clear my head and get out of Figure Eight for a while."

"Where?" was all Emerson could ask.

"The Bahamas, Ward has allowed me to borrow his house for a while," Carter answered as he set his glass of whisky down on the counter. "I'll have to come back to collect the rest of my belongings... eventually."

"When are you leaving?" Emerson asked him, trying to remain as strong as she could. She wasn't surprised that this was happening, she knew the second she saw those pictures in Carter's office she knew. She just wished that it wasn't happening at all.
