"Been running so long.
I've nearly lost all track of time.
In every direction
I couldn't see the warning signs.
I must be losin' it
'Cause my mind plays tricks on me
It looked so easy
But you know looks sometimes deceive."
Head Over Heels
The GoGo's
Sofia had only danced Peer Gynt for the third time when she was presented with a very unexpected offer. A recruiter for Cirque du Soleil was in attendance that particular night and was so taken by her performance that she had managed to get herself backstage, where she spoke with Sof before leaving for the evening. The recruiter, Devyn, left her business card with specific contact information. It had been a simple introduction, a few accurate accolades, and the hint of an offer should she decide to pursue the opportunity.
Sofia was not just surprised by the offer; she was blindsided. She had only officially been with the ballet a short time, though under apprenticeship for years. She did not feel quite as deserving as one would expect. Her surprise and humility were even further endearing to the recruiter. There was seldom any room for entitled or combative personalities under the circus' tight routine. I found myself constantly having to remind Sofi how good she was. She always tried to be just a little better every time she danced and never accepted that she was indeed good because of all her effort.
It was a Saturday evening, and I was home, looking forward to the rest of our weekend together. She phoned me immediately after Devyn left and then raced home to tell me the news. Sofi burst through the door, still full of excitement. She was glowing, and I had to let her run on for a few moments knowing she would calm down once she had it all out. I held her hand and walked with her through the apartment while she put things away and changed clothes, then I took her out to the patio where we could sit on the wicker loveseat and talk. She was going to have to repeat the whole thing top to bottom again, but at a speed, I would be able to understand. I already had her tea ready, which I brought to her then I settled in next to her to listen some more.
"Honey, you won't believe who came to see me backstage tonight?"
She began again as if saying it for the first time.
"I'd believe almost anything you told me."
"Not this," she grinned.
"Cirque du Soleil."
"Wow!" I burst out, honestly surprised.
"Sof, that's great! You are good, like really, really good. People connect with you when you dance." Oh man, when are you going to listen to me, babe?
