Two months later

For one who is an avid reader books are like their body parts. Some times I find myself in a fantasy world, wondering whether my life could get interesting. A life worth to enjoy and love. A life worth to live. What I wish for is not to these fictional characters to exist in real life but for me to be part of their extra ordinary lives. Because trying to imitate them in real life leads you to awkward and embarrassing moments.

Like the time my mom found me killing monsters in the shower.

Or the time Grace laughed at me for drawing shadow hunter ruins to clean my room. Or when Abbe asked to dress up with me for the next hunger games.

Or like the time I reenacted lion king with my cat without knowing that the windows were open.

Or.. you know what? never mind.

"Eve remember to give medicine to Abbe at 3 o'clock." I heard my mother shouting before leaving for the main market. This time I didn't beg her to take me along but worked on something real.

"Okay," I shouted back from my room.

"They are inside that white jar,"

"I know"

"And tell her to drink the soup I made."

"Now. Just. GO." I gritted my teeth out of annoyance.

Thirty minutes later, I went downstairs to wake up Abbe. Yesterday she got a bad stomachache and vomited all night. Today she is resting.

"Wake up," I shook her shoulder lightly. "I brought soup."

"Noo," she groaned. "I don't wanna eat. Lemme sleep."

"Just don't be a baby. Two options. Drink this or starve."

"That's not how you treat a sick person!"

"Are you going to drink or what?" Abbe rolled her puppy-like eyes and  took the bowl in her hands.

"Aren't you tired Abbe?" I asked totally out of the blue.

"Does stomachaches makes you tired?"

"I wasn't talking about that."

"Then what?"

"Of everything."

"Including stomachaches?"

"No idiot, I mean living like this. Scared and hiding from someone we don't even know"

"I don't know."

"Don't you want to fight back? Or at least do something?"

"Maybe?" I felt stupid asking this from a child who is only ten years old. "There isn't much for a disabled ten year old to do though." she added.

I ignored her statement. "I mean look at us. Our lives are one huge question mark. Do we even know what will be there for us in the future?" The other girl sighed.

"As long as I'll have mom, Grace and you I have nothing to worry about. You guys are the only future I want."

But we don't live forever. I gave her a small smile and told her to rest after giving her the medicine. When I turned to leave Abbe said "Don't break anything while I'm asleep. Love you."

"I love you more." I replied with a laugh.

4 o'clock.

I scanned the road one last time before heading downstairs wearing an over sized hoodie and long jeans. When I checked on Abbe I found out that she's fast asleep. I couldn't help the huge grin that came to my face. I checked my watch again and reminded myself that I should be home in twenty minutes before mom returns. Finally!! Finally after ten damn years I'm stepping out. Excitement was running through my veins to see the green parks, city's water fountain, clear sky, sunshine and people. People that reminded me that I'm not the only person left living on earth. When I stepped outside the cool breeze greeted me and I was internally screaming. Not even bothering to close the front door I strolled down the street in search of everything I didn't get to see for the past decade.

***

When I reached the end of the street, I gasped seeing the sight in front of me.

The park I used to play as a toddler was gone. Instead there was a huge electric fence separating the two parts of the town. More like separating the smaller part we lived with the bigger unknown part. Houses on the other side was in ashes and parked vehicles were burnt down. With rubbish and rubble everywhere, the place appeared like a living nightmare. Not even a hint of brightness was there in the destroyed part.

I was shocked and confused as ever and questions started flooding me. What the hell happened here? Who did this? What was the reason behind this? How did this happen to the nice city I used to live in? Did anyone secretly towed our house to another place?

I snapped into the present when hearing heavy footsteps. City guards! Holy shit! I started to panic when the footsteps got nearer. I looked around to find an opening in the fence big enough for me to go to the  other side.

Did I go through it? No, I'm not that stupid people.

Instead I found the nearest house with it's door open. Did I run to it? Yes, because everyone has even a small amount of stupidity inside them.

Pulling down my hoodie more and gripping it tightly I sprinted toward the house. "Hey you, FREEZE!!" I heard someone shout but I kept running. I got inside and quickly locked the door but then regretted it. Now I was trapped inside an abandoned house.

"Open the door!!" The city guards who chased me was banging at the door. Not even waiting for a ghost to show up I quickly scanned the small house for a place to hide. "OPEN IT! OR WE HAVE TO BREAK IT"

My heart started to beat faster. "Urgh think straight" I mumbled to myself while entering the kitchen. Then luckily I spotted a window and rushed to open it. "Shit, it's stuck." I picked the nearest thing to the window which was a antique vase.  I banged it against the glass window only to find that the vase was made of fake plastic. Life just hates me. Being out of other ideas, continued to hit the damn vase against the window. Finally the window cracked and with another hit it shattered to pieces.

Just then I heard the city guards break through the front door. I clumsily jumped off the window and scraped my knee but still kept running like a mad dog was chasing me. I ran and ran and ran and ran. And ran. Without looking back for a second, I ran.

When the house and city guard were no where in sight I stopped to catch my breath. Until now I didn't know that I could run like this. Is this what it feels like when people run for their dear life?

It was a bit gloomy so I checked my watch. 5.30??!!

On my way I prayed for mom to not be home yet. But deep down I knew she was already there. So just in case I practiced an explanation speech while walking to our house in a rapid speed.

***

When I opened the door something I least expected greeted me. A dagger went through my heart piercing it. "Oh my god," I gasped.

"What have you done?!" my mom whispered looking at me. Both my mom and Grace were in tears and soon my vision became blurry as well.

"You can't conquer reality by running away from them"

A/N: This chapter was supposed to have another scene but the word limit got over 2500!!! So I excluded part thinking that it will be boring if too long. Now keep your curiosity at its sake.  Ya'll think what happened? What's Evelyn's reaction to it?
