Evelyn's POV
I blinked my eyes open, only to see darkness. Therefore, I closed them again and shivered. I was lying curled on the icy flagstone floor. I must have fainted.
I have been hearing the sound of fighting for a quarter of an hour now, the unmistakable sound of running feet, rattling of doors, loud gunshots, and people screaming. I wish I could be like this all day, eyes closed, lying down, doing nothing. After all, I'm too fragile to do anything. I could drown in my own pool of fragility.
The door open and footsteps followed in. I didn't dare to open my eyes. Maybe they already killed Mar and now they are here for my execution. It doesn't matter. As long as I die and people forget that I ever existed, it doesn't matter.
Someone knelt beside me and shook my shoulder. "Eve! EVE! EVELYN!" a voice spoke out of the blankness, panicked but familiar. I inhaled the scent of the familiarity, felt the long fingers that sometimes I couldn't stop staring at. I groaned and slowly peeled my eyes open.
"Oh god, Evelyn," Alec bent down and hugged me tightly. "You scared the hell out of me."
Nervously, I brought my arms behind him and buried my head on the crook of his neck. "It's okay," I assured, my words a bit muffled by the tight embrace.
"Ahem," someone cleared her throat. "We need to move on." Alec and I broke the hug and I saw an unfamiliar brunette girl standing at the door. She was savage-looking yet pretty, like someone responsible for the stolen lunch that you were anyway willing to give.
Alec gave me his hand. I took it and stood up, dusting myself. My insides still felt weak and broken-
"Eve!" Jett burst through the door and I hurled myself at him too. He was concerned but mostly relieved. "Are you okay?" he asked after releasing me.
"I'm fine," I said but then shook my head. The memory of Mar maddening about me on the phone while I kept rambling I'm fine, felt like ages ago. I swallowed to find my voice. "No, not really... Mar..."
"What happened to her?!" Jett demanded, suddenly getting alarmed.
"They took her away for an interrogation." It's the best way I can put it, I thought. "We need to find where she is."
"I already hacked the security system, but it won't be off for too long," supplied the brunette girl. "We need to find the correct room as well."
"Maybe the control rooms?" Alec suggested. "We need to start off somewhere."
"True," agreed Jett. He was tapping his feet impatiently, or worriedly, I don't know. He should be worried right? Marlene is his sister.
The girl spoke up. "What if we split up? So two can find Mar while the other pair find a way out of this horrible maze of hallways. We can meet again-"
"Splitting up is a bad idea at the moment," Alec cut her off.
"But we've got no choice, Alec! Does your brilliant coconut head have any other ideas?!"
"We are wasting our time arguing," I pointed out.
"The girl is right. I will take her and find Mar. You two can find an exit for us."
"But-" Alec started to protest, he didn't seem to like the idea of splitting up.
"Jett, you got your walkie right?" asked the girl, for which Jett nodded. "Good. Let's meet at the exit in thirty minutes, if lucky."
She turned toward the door and I followed, pausing to look at the boys before I went. However, it was the image of Alec that got stuck in my mind - filthy, bloody and sweaty with a glint in his eyes that made my heart skip a beat.
