Evelyn's POV
I sucked in a breath. I knew I should run away but my feet wouldn't budge. Suddenly the gravity was pulling me down, pinning me to the earth.
I could only stare. Stare as the blue eyes I adored, filled with glassy tears. They were shinier than the silver glint of the knife.
"I'm a murderer, Evelyn. See this knife? See how small of a weapon it is? While others use this to cut vegetables, I use this to take lives. Those lives weren't mine to take but did that stop me? I was trained to kill. To hurt. Why do you think I won't hurt you? Why do you think you're an exception?"
As the first tear rolled down, my fingers twitched to wipe it away. I was astonished at my amount of self-control. "Didn't you hear me? Run away from me you foolish girl," Alec hissed, tightening his grip on the knife, almost ready to raise it.
I flinched, only because it's been a while since I was treated with his harshness. That small action satisfied him. It was what he wanted. For me to run away from him.
Little did he know I was exhausted from pretending that I didn't care about him. I need to find the right words but my throat suddenly feels swollen. I shook my head, telling him that I wasn't going to run. Not this time. I want to know the whole truth and I decline to run without it, even if the other option meant dying.
"I trust you," I confessed the three words in a tiny voice that was barely above a whisper. Those three words held enough power and meaning why I was always drawn to him and why it was too late to turn back now.
There was a clatter of silver. Alec had dropped the knife.
He sank onto his knees and for a moment, I was confused about what to do.
"Alec? Are you okay?"
His shoulders were hunched and he was shaking. What is happening? I came down in front of him and lightly touched his shoulder. I was brave, confident, and mainly not afraid.
It took me two heartbeats to realize he was shaking with laughter. Gods, I had never been more clueless my entire life.
"You are impossible," he muttered, sniffing a bit. I gently stroked his shoulder blade. Did I miss something?
He looked up, meeting my eyes. I could see my own reflection in his.
"Here I was, threatening to take your life. And you are concerned about me?"
I smiled. I couldn't help it.
He caught my smile and suddenly became serious like before. All the playfulness vanished. Honestly, it's time I get used to Alec's mood swings. I don't think he can control what he was raised to be. He was raised to take quick actions like a fighter, and it affected not only his mentality and physicality but also his emotional side.
"You know who I am, Evelyn. One peek into my secret life means there is no turning back. This is a one-way trip." He paused and sighed. "It's not like you'll listen to me anyway. But, I beg you. Please make this choice wisely."
"No more leaving each other," I said instead, not hesitating in the slightest.
His eyes softened, for real. He touched my cheek, absently brushed it with his hand, but quickly dropped it.
"No, never." He stood up and offered me his hand. "You ready?"
I nodded and took his hand.
My dad taught me to make decisions from my heart, no matter how reckless that is. Now, my heart chose to be with Alec, no matter the consequences. I made my choice and I don't regret it.
