Lawrence stared into the darkness of the room silently for a while before he looked towards the door he slowly crawled towards it and looked under it curiously he paused and let out a sigh seeing nothing but darkness. He felt his way around pausing on the leather leash that connected to his collar. He slowly moved his hands down the leather and paused feeling the point it connected to the wall.

He carefully pulled at it pausing to listen to the deafening silence around him. He pulled at the leather harder with all his weight and yelped as it snapped sending him tumbling backwards onto the floor. He covered his mouth quickly and stared towards the door in horror. He waited a while and when he still heard nothing he let out a sigh of relief he crawled back towards the door and looked under it again.

He slowly got to his feet and tried the door handle showing surprise as it opened easily. His owner must have forgotten to lock it the last time he had been visited. He slowly walked out of the room picking the leather that dragged from his collar up to keep from making noise. He peaked around a corner and winced a bit shielding his eyes from the window before he looked around.

Nervously he walked to the front door and very carefully unlocked it pulling it open. He looked towards the stairs for a moment before he went outside and began running away from the darkened house. He clutched the leash close to him so it didn't get caught on anything as he ran away from the place he'd spent most of his life. Only coming to a stop once he reached a road.

He breathed heavily as he slowly walked down the road. He froze as he looked at a gardening store quietly. His eyes shifting from one car to the next. He slowly walked inside and looked around curiously pausing at a pair of bolt cutters. He picked it up and looked around walking to the bathroom he looked in the mirror quietly and took a deep breath adjusting the bolt cutters around the lock that kept his collar on.

He hesitated for a moment before he cut the lock and unfastened the collar pulling it off slowly. He ran his fingers over his neck quietly looking to the collar in his hands. He put the bolt cutters on the sink and walked out quietly leaving the store relaxing a bit as he walked without the collar on.

He looked towards the sky quietly while he walked through the town. He tried to remember where his home was before he stopped and stared at a sign on a police station for a while squinting as if that would make it easier to read. He looked at the doors then back to the sign before he walked in curiously. He froze seeing a picture of himself at 5 years old hung on the wall. He pulled it off and squinted again flinching at the sound of a female officer speaking from behind him.

"Sad what happened to that kid. We never did find him. His parents gave up a while ago. Said he was dead. He has a grave up in the cemetery." She looked at him "hey you kinda look like him" she smiled amused by her observation "if he wasn't dead I would say you could probably be him."

Lawrence's face fell as he looked back to the paper trying to think of words before he asked "so what happened to his parents?"

The officer looked to him "ah well. Same thing that happens to every parent that lost a kid I guess they mourned for a while then moved on. Last I heard they had two more kids now."

Lawrence looked away from her again and stared at the paper folding it quietly before he walked out

The office watched him "hey you cant really take that" she sighed and went back to her desk
