Chapter III - In The Midst of BattleJANUARY 1461 - Yorkshire
"Duchess Madelena!" A young girl called after Madelena, now the Duchess of York. "His grace, Duke Edward is looking for you."
Madelena hurried after the young girl as it seemed to be something extremely important for Edward to send a servant and not fetch her himself as he usually did.
"Your grace! One moment!" A loud voice roared over from another tent. A voice from a person she didn't want to meet right now, or at any time in her life. The slimy voice that made her blood curl after not giving Edward any time to grieve his brother or father. The voice that treated her hand her mother-in-law like dirt on the bottom of his shoe after Duke Richard died.
Madelena didn't want to turn to the man calling after her however she knew better than not to.
"Lord Warwick! To what do I owe the pleasure!" Madelena said as she turned around with an overly sweet smile. Even if she didn't like him she knew he had to keep him happy as he had Edward's ear.
Years of politics in Rome had taught her that one.
"Madelena I must ask if you're with child yet."
That shocked her greatly. Not only that question but that Warwick had used her first name as well.
"Or do you use some of that witchcraft of yours to kill the child before anyone knows?" Warwick spat. "That witchcraft you've used to heal our soldiers!"
Warwick's accusation of her had been outrageous. Many doctors at the Yorkist camp liked her ideas of medicine, like keeping the medical tools clean in case of an infection. She hadn't killed any soldiers of her ideas, even though she had watched men die she never killed them directly.
"What makes you believe you may make such outrageous accusations, Lord Warwick?"
"It is not I that should answer to you, but as you won't answer me I'll have to raise my concerns to your husband," Warwick argued back. "He will likely send you away and find a new whore to seed his children in as you can not seem to do that."
And with that, he was off with long strides to Edward.
Never in a million years had Madelena thought that Edward whom she cared for and cared for her would believe Warwick. Yes, he may be like a brother to Edward and maybe even a bit of a father figure but she didn't believe that Edward would believe him so bluntly without talking to her first.
So when she found Edward full of rage and with a look of fire within his eyes she couldn't help but stumble back a bit.
"Please tell me what Warwick told me isn't true!" Edward pleaded with his eyes closed and fists clenched as he heard Madelena enter the tent. "Tell me that you haven't killed my soldiers!"'
