FRIDAY, AUGUST 28, 1959
"I didn't know your sister was having a baby," Paul said as he and Alexandria strolled down the road, standing as far apart as possible without looking like they weren't together.
"Yep," Alexandria responded. "She's due in four months. I'm not sure what we're gonna do when we have to take care of it. We can barely take care of ourselves, for God's sake." Alexandria wrapped her arms around herself, pondering all the sad parts of her life bitterly. Every single day, she seemed to find another reason to wish her mother was alive.
Alexandria knew that Paul had lost his mother to breast cancer about three years ago, and she definitely sympathized with him. After her own mother's death from the same disease, George had tried like hell to get her to talk to Paul, but she refused profusely. She barricaded herself in her room for weeks and refused to see everyone, George being the only exception. Then, when her father left, her bedroom confinement was elongated by a few more weeks.
It was a dark time for her. A dark time where she contemplated her entire existence. She wondered to herself why she was even alive at all. If everyone just left her behind, why was she alive? What was the point in living life entirely alone?
Now, George was leaving her behind too. She was sure of it. In a matter of days, George and Guinevere would be inseparable, and then where did that leave her? Alone.
She lifted her head to look at the boy at her side, and she began to think. When Paul caught her staring, she grinned at her. "Like what you see?" he asked.
Her mouth fell open in disgust. "No way!" she responded. "Just trying to figure out how in the world I ended up with you on my Friday night."
"You'll be glad you did," Paul said with a grin.
Alexandria raised an eyebrow. "Will I? That seems unlikely."
"Is that a challenge?" he persisted, the smirk not leaving his lips.
Alexandria hesitated. She and Paul's ideas of a good time were no doubt incredibly different. She didn't have to get to know him to figure it out.
"Gonna answer me or just keep staring at me?" Paul asked.
"Make me not regret this," Alexandria said finally. "Because I don't want to live my life knowing that I wasted a perfectly good Friday night."
Paul grinned. "As you wish," he said with a charming smile. Then, he surprised Alexandria by moving in closer to her and grabbing her hand, squeezing it tight enough so that she couldn't get away. The younger girl's face immediately began to turn red, and she looked away from him to hide it.
"Add a little yellow and yer cheeks would be the same color as that lovely red hair of yours," Paul flirted, and it was like he was a different person entirely. Instead of being a boy who did nothing but torment Alexandria and George, he was making Alexandria's heart warm because of his stupid flirting, even though Alexandria was almost 100% sure that he was joking.
