MONDAY, DECEMBER 21, 1959
Rain trickled down the sides of the Harrison residence. George watched as the droplets slid down the glass of the window and landed on the windowsill below it. It was such a gloomy day. His fight with Alexandria still lingered on the top of his mind and he was still left wondering what he could have done differently. Would he be so upset right now if he'd only apologized before she went into her house?
He longed to see her again. He missed being around her in the same way that he had been before school started. He missed spending the afternoons and the weekends with her. He missed their weekly sleepovers where he would share whatever music material he had written and where she would share whatever she had written during the week. He even missed her insulting everything he offered up and how difficult it was to insult hers in return because of how good she was at what she did.
Meanwhile, Alexandria, Kathleen, and Jack were next door, rifling through boxes of Christmas figurines. Alexandria fiddled with a nativity set, situating it on an end table in the living room. Nearby, Kathleen adjusted a Santa on the mantle above the fireplace. Jack had run off to retrieve Wesley, who had started crying as soon as he woke up from his nap.
The house was beginning to feel cozier. The incense burning on the coffee table and the candles spread throughout the bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchen made the air smell divine. The atmosphere smelled of cinnamon and nutmeg. Alexandria was cozily dressed in a white sweater and some black trousers. Two sections from the front of her hair were pulled back and tied up so that it wouldn't be in her eyes and her red hair was wavy from the braids that had been in them the night before. Despite the row she'd had with George the day before, she was happy. Decorating the house was proving to be a rather calming experience.
Paul hadn't been able to accompany her today. His day was being spent with his dad as the McCartneys prepared for an out-of-town holiday party with their extended family.
"Are you going to Paul's Christmas party?" Kathleen asked. "He did ask you, right?"
Alexandria's cheeks turned pink. Paul had invited her. Alexandria was just too scared to tell him yes right away. She'd lied, said that she'd have to talk to Kathleen whenever she knew for a fact that they didn't have anything to do. I mean, meeting the rest of Paul's family? Aunts, uncles, grandparents? Wasn't that a bit terrifying, especially for a sixteen-year-old? "Yeah, he asked me," Alexandria answered Kathleen, turning and going to retrieve another figurine from the box.
"That's good," Kathleen replied. "But, are you going?"
"Are we busy?" Alexandria braved a look at her sister.
Kathleen raised an eyebrow. "No, we're not busy," she replied. "Do you want to go?"
"Well, of course, I want to," Alexandria said. "I'm just a little nervous is all."
