FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1959
"Alexandria what?" George asked Guinevere, and Paul just so happened to walk by the two of them on his way to meet Alexandria by the front gate of the school.
"She hit me, George!" Guinevere said shrilly and Paul cocked an eyebrow.
"She hit you?" Paul butted in from the opposite side of George.
Guinevere nodded. "I tried to start a conversation with her...and she just hit me, then she walked away!"
Paul looked over at George to see that he looked a bit torn. That didn't sound like Alexandria at all. Granted, she was always a bit up and arms when they made her moody, but it was always in jest. She was starkly against solving problems with—well—violence.
"Well, what did you say to her?" George asked. Guinevere swore to Paul and George that she had been trying to be kind to Alexandria, that she had been trying to clear the air between them, and that Alexandria's wack at her had been uncalled for, but Paul didn't believe a word that he was hearing because he knew Alexandria. George was a bit torn too because that also didn't sound like Alexandria. And if it was the truth, he worried that something might be wrong with Alexandria, and that made his heartbeat rather fast.
"Just asked her how her day was going." Guinevere shrugged. "That's not mean, is it?"
"That also isn't something that would make Alexandria hit anyone, so it doesn't exactly sound like the truth," Paul replied stubbornly.
George stayed silent.
"Well, maybe you just don't know her as well as you think you do, Paul," Guinevere replied.
"Are you buying any of this bullshite, George?" Paul demanded of his younger friend. "You really believe a word she's saying? You've known Alexandria practically your whole life! Let's go see what she has to say about all of this, hm?"
"She's been suspended," Guinevere said.
"Suspended?" Paul asked. "She got suspended for hitting you once? I've been hitting people in school my whole life and I've never gotten anymore than five lashes!"
"Guess it's different at the girls' school, hm, Paul?" Guinevere responded. "I promise you I watched her leave. Her and her sister, who's clearly very pregnant. She's unmarried, isn't she?"
"George, are your ears full of bloody cotton or something?" Paul asked. "Do you hear what she's bloody saying?"
George still refused to speak. He was leaning more towards Paul's side, though he'd never admit it aloud, especially not in front of Guinevere, and especially not after what the pair had done last night.
