Chloe took the stairs to her floor instead of the elevator and prayed her roommate wasn’t in yet. She needed a second to process what just happened. Slade wasn’t gay. He and Danny were serious when they said they were best friends.
“Hey, we’re all going to Omeara’s room,” Chloe’s roommate, Shelby said as soon as she walked in. “We’re gonna do nails, wanna come?”
“No, I have to call Clay,” Chloe said. She took a deep breath.
“Oh my god, are you breaking up?” Shelby gasped. “Is that why you look so sad?”
“Why would we break up?” Chloe asked.
“I heard you and Slade went on a date tonight,” Shelby said. “Lucky bitch.”
“Wow, so everyone knew but me,” Chloe said. “Great.”
“Oh,” Shelby raised her eyebrows. “Well, good luck with that.”
“Thanks,” Chloe said sarcastically. While Shelby was putting all her nail stuff in a bag to take down the hall, Chloe changed into her pajamas. She plugged her iPad in and propped it up while she Facetimed her boyfriend, Clay.
“Okay, what happened?” Clay asked, answering halfway through the first ring. Chloe knew her face must have told him she was in a bad mood.
“It’s nothing,” Chloe shook her head. “Just,” she paused and then with no warning at all started crying.
“Oh,” Clay breathed.
“Sorry,” Chloe wiped her face. “I don’t even know why I’m crying,” she told him. She hadn’t been that upset about Slade a second ago. Why was she crying now?
“Are you homesick?” Clay asked.
“A little,” Chloe nodded. “I miss my room and Dad’s dinners.”
“Is that all you miss?” Clay asked.
“Dipshit, I miss you most,” Chloe wiped her eyes again. “But I don’t know, I don’t really want to come back. It’s weird.”
“You have a week left,” Clay said. “Did I tell you Dad’s bringing me to your showcase?”
“Yeah,” Chloe nodded. “A week, wow, I can’t believe it.”
“I know, that’s so soon,” Clay smiled. “I’m trying to talk Dad into getting you and me our own room at the hotel but he’s being difficult.”
“We’re leaving the next morning,” Chloe said. “I already have a room in the residence hall,” she said.
