Danny took a deep breath when he realized Matt was walking right for him that Monday after school. He’d been waiting outside for Slade so they could go to ballet together. Slade was forever late and Danny knew it was worse that day because Slade wasn’t ready to see Chloe yet.

Danny also knew there was a good reason Chloe hadn’t texted Slade since she got back to New York. Slade had no idea that Danny still knew the password to his phone or that Danny deleted the text from Chloe saying she was back and coming to see him. Which meant he had no idea that Danny had also told Chloe that Slade didn’t want to talk.

But Danny didn’t have time to feel guilty about it right then. He was too worried about why Matt was headed in his direction and what he would say.

“You have to stop this,” Matt said. Danny froze. Of all the things he’d thought Matt might say that wasn’t one of them.

“Uh, what?” Danny asked.

“You’re ruining it,” Matt shook his head. “I need you to stop.”

“Stop what?” Danny tried to look around and see if anyone was watching but he couldn’t do that in a casual way.

“This,” Matt yanked the cigarette out of Danny’s mouth and put it out.

“Oh, do you know-” Danny almost pointed out how expensive cigarettes were in New York but realized that would only add to Matt’s rant. “Nevermind,” he said.

“If you need something in your mouth, I’ve got something better,” Matt grinned, giving Danny a look he could practically feel. Matt walked away then before Danny could even process what had just happened.

“But what am I ruining?” Danny asked though he knew Matt was too far away to hear him.

“Hm?” Slade startled him.

“Nothing. Ready?” Danny hated the look on Slade’s face. Hated it.

“Yeah, let’s get this over with,” Slade said. Danny wished he could do something, anything to fix Slade’s bad mood. This was his fault, but he had a really good reason for doing it.

“Bye Slade,” some girl Danny didn’t know waved at Slade. She had that look on her face like she was just waiting for a chance to open her legs for him.

“Bye,” Slade nodded at her, barely looking in her direction.

“Um,” Danny elbowed Slade. He’d never seen Slade ignore a girl before, not one who would have been so easy for him to get.  “What are you doing?”

“I thought we were going to ballet,” Slade said. “I might skip today, I don’t know.”
