Mother

My mom was always a strong woman.

She was the youngest of 3 siblings. She had an older sister, my aunt, and an older brother. They didn't grow up in Tokyo but rather the city 5 hours away, Kyoto. But that was the only normal thing in her family.

My mom's brother who was older by nine years was their half brother. He was the result of my dad and another woman.

He didn't like anyone in the family. You couldn't blame him. Their dad was a serious man with a short temper and their mom would turn a blind eye to the abuse of the kids.

He really, really, really hated their mom.

He did a lot of bad things, hung out with the wrong crowd, and sometimes never came home. But he was smart, really smart. He kept up a good reputation at school, had a secret job, and study English non stop.

So the day he turned 18 he left, and never came back. Cutting all ties with the humans he was forced to live with.

No one cared. He wasn't close with anyone. My mom spoke good of him but it was my aunt who told me the truth. She found out a couple years later that he moved to America and had some girlfriend named Ashley.

My aunt was older than my sister by three years. My grandmother didn't like the idea of having to raise a kid she wasn't related to, so they had her. My aunt was kind and smart too. But she wanted to leave the toxic environment as soon as possible.

She always stood up for my mom whenever she was getting yelled at. I can recall my mom saying she wished she was as strong as her sister.

With her smartness and clean history she got accepted into a college in Tokyo. So she too left.

My mom wasn't blessed with brains like her siblings, her dad really despised her. She was nothing but a failure to her parents and my mom was scared knowing she wouldn't be able to make it to college.

But what my mom lacked in smarts she made up for her beauty. Being young, innocent, and coming from a toxic household, she caught feelings for anyone who would pay attention to her. Affection, that's all she needed.

So she didn't know how bad it was when she started seeing a 26 year old man when she was 15. She never told my grandparents, and like the others she moved out as soon as she finished highschool.

Only to move in with the man who would ruin her life.

He slowly started to take control of my mother. Making her cut all ties off with her sister, limiting the clothes she would wear, and even picking her up from fastfood job every single day. But it was love to my mom. She missed the red flags and only noticed them when it was too late.

He slowly started to remind her of her father. Becoming manipulative and abuses but she couldn't leave. She would have no money and she knew no one besides the people she worked with. Her coworkers knew what was going on but whenever they asked she denied everything.

She was a good lier.

When she turned 20 she had me, and that's when her life would go to hell.

I wish I could forget, but I remember the fights, the house stinking like smoke, and the beer bottles scattered around that old guy's arm chair. I also remember the good times, like my mom taking me to my first day of school or when she would take me out to eat.

Things got worse and worse, my mom was becoming depressed and stressed and my dad was getting more addicted every day. I would cover my ears to block out the noise of their argument, from vocal to physical, I didn't want to hear or see any of it.
