I walked into the party but didn't immediately look for anyone. Usually I would b-line for my friends. But tonight I wasn't even in the mood to be there. And I wouldn't be there if Ivanna hadn't told me she's going out with Marcus.
I seen Marcus heading in my direction as I stood at the drink table. He rested his arm on my shoulder, "hey, Curtis."
I turned towards him and took a sip of my drink. "What do you want?"
"Just thought you'd have an idea when your little friend would be showing up?" He grinned. "Glad she agreed to be my company instead of yours."
"Yea, well she don't know any better." I scoffed. "Any normal girl wouldn't have said yes."
"Aw, don't be so mean," he teased. "It's okay. Paul stole your other side piece already," he nudged me then looked over.
Gabriella was kissing Paul. I looked away from them and my chest tightened. I looked back at Marcus.
"I don't give a shit. That bitch and I weren't even seeing each other." I huffed.
"Well I heard through the grapevine that you and her spent all this past week together- in bed- like bunnies." He laughed like an idiot.
"God you're annoying." I took a drink. "Good luck with Ivanna." I pat his shoulder and walked past him.
I walked outside and sat down. I stared at the pool, the calm water as I drank. If it was warm out it'd be one hell of a night swim for this party. I mean summertime pool parties always last well into the morning since it's always in the 80s.
I wasn't having fun at all. As much as I don't want to be at home right now, I think I'd much rather be there than here. I stood up as soon as I finished my drink so I could leave.
"Darry!" Paul called from across the room as I walked into the house.
I glanced over. Gabriella wasn't with him anymore. I mean, I don't even want to talk to Paul since he's going out with Gabriella but he doesn't know her and I were having sex again. He wouldn't be going out with her if he knew. But she made it clear she doesn't want to get back together since I cheated on her the first time so I guess it's fair.
"Hey," I walked over to Paul.
He tilted his head at me and let out a laugh, "what's got you down?"
"Nothing." I shook my head.
"Well how's shit going with that girl of yours? You haven't been at school or practice all week."
I glanced around and my eyes landed on Marcus, who I guess finally found Ivanna because they were chatting. Paul followed my gaze and let out a gruff laugh.
"Ooooh. Miller's got her? She took a big step down. Star football player to just some kid on the track team." Paul laughed.
I know he was trying to hype me up but I wasn't feeling it. I looked at Ivanna again and sighed, "yeah."
"Dude, you alright?" Paul stepped in front of my view. "Man, if you want the chick go after her."
"She isn't like other girls, Paul. She don't know how things work yet." I leaned against the wall.
He leaned next to me and stared forward at her, "she is a real looker, isnt she?" He chuckled.
I glanced at him then back at her, "shes so hot." I agreed.
"Have you slept with her yet?" He asked.
I shook my head, "no. I've barely kissed her once."
Paul chuckled, "man, go get your girl then."
"She wants to be with him tonight." I huffed. "I'll try another night."
"No, go get her." He shoved me forward. "If he gives you trouble I got two fists that could handle him just fine."
I rolled my eyes and chuckled, "Paul, I'm good."
"Fine, I'm going over there." Paul shoved past me and before I could even comprehend anything he was stepping between Marcus and Ivanna.
I stood there for a second and watched Marcus shove Paul, upset that he interrupted their conversation. I watched Paul try to ignore Marcus and just talk to Ivanna, but Marcus shoved him again.
I ran over knowing how easily a fight could break out. In no favor of Marcus, since he's just a kid on the track team while Paul is the running back on the football team. And the fact that even if Andrew could win, the football team would be on his ass faster than he could ever even think.
"Paul just leave it," I pushed him back.
"I'm just trying to talk to your girl here and-"
"I don't care. She ain't even my girl." I huffed. "I don't need you starting a fight."
"You gotta fight for your girl, man," Paul chuckled.
I looked at Ivanna and she was staring at us. I looked back at Paul, "she ain't my girl."
"Not with that attitude she ain't." Paul turned to Ivanna. "You like Darry?"
She looked at him then looked at me. I turned to walk away but he grabbed my wrist to make me stay. I rubbed the back of my neck.
"Yeah I like him." She smiled.
"Ivanna you don't even know what he means," I shook my head. "Stop answering questions you don't have an answer to."
"But I do like you, Darry." She frowned. "You're a good friend."
"We aren't talking about friends." I huffed again. "God you can be so stupid, Iva."
"Yikes," Marcus laughed as he stood behind us.
I looked at Ivanna and she was just staring at me. Tears welled in her eyes and I sighed. "Ivanna-"
"Leave me alone," she turned away.
"I didn't mean that, hun," I reached for her hand but she pulled it away and turned to me.
"Steve was right about you."
"Ivanna I'm sorry." I sighed. "Really."
"I wanna go home." She walked away and Marcus followed her.
