Remus

It was another brainstorming day for my project.

Brainstorming meant I laid on my back and stared at the muggle glow in dark stickers my mum got me that I put on the ceiling, and thought about how I would go about this whole map thing.

The idea was to make a map that moved with the stairs and would include all the secret passages that we had found.

Today's brainstorming session (never complete without a bit of missing my mum) brought the idea to track the teachers with little names.

With a little more thinking I decided I would just track everyone in the castle, including ghosts. I had to make it so it would recognize people in the castle and not just track specific people so I wouldn't have to track each person individually. And make it so i could track mcgonagall in her animagus form. Plus new people wouldn't have to be added every year and the problem of people leaving the school.

Author's note: ignore that glow in the dark stickers were invented in 1977 i thought it was cute okay? (i have a few on my ceiling)

"Remus, how did you know you were a boy when you were younger?"

He looked up from his book, which he doesn't often do. "Well, at some point, it just felt right. Before i knew i was a boy, i knew i wasn't a girl"

"Oh." i said thoughtfully

"Why?"

"No particular reason. Also unrelated. What if boy or girl doesn't sound right?"

"That's fine. There's non-binary. When you don't feel like a girl or a boy."

"What if you feel like a boy sometimes?"

"I don't know. I don't see why gender can't change."

"Oh, so I could be a girl today, a boy tomorrow and non.. Non biney?"

"Non binary. Binary is like two, girl and boy, so nonbinary is anything beyond those two."

"Right."

"Yeah, I guess so."

"So, i could be nonbinary all the time but also be a boy and a girl?"

"Yeah. i think so. That's the whole thing right?"

"Full rainbow of gender. Gay every day."

"Yeah, I guess. are .. you saying that you are nonbinary."

"Can you call me she/they today?I just want to try it out."

"Of course."

AN: the term gender fluid was coined in the 80s so.. This is the best i can do

"Black!"

I closed my eyes and braced myself.

I turned around to face my cousin. Bella glared in her usual hateful crazy way. "Have you been avoiding me, my dear cousin?"

I mentally rolled my eyes. "Bellatrix."

"Why are you fraternizing your brother?"

"What do you mean?"

"You were seen talking with him."

"Really? Well, he is my brother, so I have talked to him before."

"Talking with that disgusting cat, outside the most necessary conversations.."

"You do not know the content of our conversation bella, don't assume, it is unseemly."

She sneered.

This was how pure bloods fought.

"I doubt you are sharing homework answers with that feline."

"I believe there are better ways to refer to his house."

"No matter, if anyone of estemined taste were to be seen around one of them, well, he or she wouldn't be estemined anymore."

"Say it how it is, cousin, we are in knowing company. I will do as I please. You have no power over me."

Her eyes were icy hot with rage. "Don't be rude. I know those who do have power over you."

"Ah, you want to go tell on me to mother and father?"

Her jaw dropped slightly in mock horror. "My, are we rude today. I am your elder."

"I do not care any longer. Soon, cousin."

Remus

I left the common room to go up to our room. Peter was in on whatever project they were working on, I believe, but it was mostly Siri and james. The other three were in the common room so I suspected that they would work on it while I was up there.

It was perfect. I worked on the map, they worked on their projects. This brainstorming session couldn't just be me staring at the ceiling since the books I would have to read would block that. I wondered if all the books about tracking made me sound a little creepy, but hopefully my love of reading and the books about maps, ghosts, magically stairways, the history of Hogwarts and other books I got made it seem less creepy.

"Yeah, but why won't you tell me what you and her are working on!"

"We're not- wait you mean me and siri right?"

"Yeah?"

"So you mean me and him."

Pads got up from where he was sitting and walked over. "It's okay, prongs, I asked him too."

"Oh," I said with relief and then I realized what he said. "Oh! Do you use she/her now?"

He hesitated. "No, I just want to try some other pronouns sometimes?"

"And today?" I asked

"she/they."

"okay. '' I said and turned back to remus. "We're not working on anything, moony."

"I'll figure it out sometime, you know."

"Soon, moons, soon." pads reassured him

I ruffled her hair. "Don't give it away" i said quietly

"Noooo, don't touch my hair!"

I scoffed. "Drama queen."

"Oh! Pads, will you paint my nails?"

They rolled their eyes. "Always, gay boy."

"Girl! You're gay as fxxk." remus said

I smiled to myself and listened to the beautiful sound of my friends arguing over meaningless stuff.
