I was typing away on my laptop when she came back to the couch from getting us snacks. Hanging out at her apartment was becoming a habit. I'd pretend it was to work on our project, but most of the time we just ended up laughing and talking about some oddly specific thing she was into. I think I could listen to her talk about anything and be entranced by her.
Lara Jean had finally baked me those muffins she promised and they had not disappointed. She made me a muffin basket to bring home to prove her point. She insisted I saved some for Trevor, her new partner in crime since the party. I should be annoyed how good she was at everything. But it was her, so it made sense.
She plopped down on the couch and I looked over at her. The sun was setting outside and the golden light from the window framed her like a masterpiece. The entire room glowed. The gold light making her apartment feel warm and inviting, just like her. It was magical, one of those moments I'm going to have stuck in my mind forever. She caught me admiring her and slowly smiled at me. Our eyes met for a second before I turned back to my computer's screen. We did actually have to work on our project today. "I think we introduce each movie and how it applies with a quick clip to prove our point." I stared blankly at the white screen of our Google Slides. The presentation at the end of the semester was worth a quarter of our grade.
"Don't you think that will take too long? The rubric said it has to be between five and ten minutes. Won't that take up too much time?" she pulled her knees up to her chest and crossed her ankles.
"We can cut the scenes. Trevor is weirdly good at editing things. I can get him to do it for us for like a pizza and a six pack." I shrugged.
"What a cheap date." She smiled at me and my heart beat 5 times faster. Since her date with coffee shop guy, I had wanted to see her every moment possible. Our texts increased, not wanting to be off her mind for more than a few minutes. I just wanted to be with her. I didn't realize how possessive I was being until it got called out last night. After a night out, Trevor said I had jealous face he told me she was texting John all day. I scoffed him off. I knew they were going on a date, but couldn't imagine that it would actually work between them. She was Covey. Covey couldn't date my friends.
My mind couldn't stray away from her, but I'm not sure if that was fair. I was just out of a relationship. Lara Jean was my friend, quickly becoming one of my closest friends. There was no way I was going to mess this one up.
LJ looked over at my typed out slide and bit her lip while reading. Wow she was pretty. She lips naturally pink and full. Shit. She's Lara Jean. She's Covey. She's my Covey.
"Speaking of dates." I needed to break the heat building in my chest. "You never told me all the details about coffee man."
"Ew." She threw her head back and I noticed how smooth her neck was for the first time. "He talked for almost an hour straight. Wouldn't let me get a word in. Not even a question or anything. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he was just nervous, but ugh. Not my finest moment."
"Sounds like you didn't do anything wrong." I wanted to tell her it was because she wasn't with the right person, but how do I do that without telling her the right person wasn't John either. How do I tell her that I'm the right person, if I'm not ready to be the right person. "What was he going on about anyway? I don't know if I could go an hour talking about anything."
"Space." She rolled her eyes. "I asked him about a space ship on his shirt and he took that as a spring board."
"Two things." I put up my fingers. "One, he wore a space ship shirt to a first date? Is he 7 years old?" I shook my head. "No Bueno." She let out a small giggle that made me feel like I won the lottery. "And two. Why space? Is he studying to be an astronaut or something?"
