The spring of my feet running on the slightly damp grass vibrated through my entire body. The seconds were dwindling down on the game clock. We were tied. How the fuck were we tied? The other team surprised us with how good they were. This was supposed to be an easy win. Coach told me I probably wouldn't even play in the second half, but god were we wrong. We had watched hours of tape of them and they looked nothing like this. They were faster and scrappier than you could see on tape.
I was determined to not let them hand us our first loss of the season. I ran back to see Trevor check a guy making the ball come free from his stick and bounce onto the ground. John rushed towards it and chucked it at me. I had to jump to get it, but now that the ball was secured, it was my time to get to work.
I pivoted and raced towards the net. The crowed started to cheer and it only made my legs move faster. I spun around a defender and barely avoided an elbow to the stomach. They were playing rough & determined today. My breath was heavy after running for almost an hour.
I got into shooting position and flung the ball towards the net. The goalie spread is arms and blocked the ball from going in. Shit. My teammate Alex ran to scoop it up to try his own shot. Another one blocked. Fuck. Can we please get it together people? I ran behind the net as Johnny stole the ball away from one of their players and threw it towards me. It hit my net with a thump. John was so much stronger than he looked. I rushed around the net and as the goalie moved to the left, I swooshed the ball into the top right corner. SCORE!
The crowd went wild. Everyone on their feet, yelling wildly. My teammates rushed to hug and jump on me. I looked up at the clock there were only 5 seconds left. That would be the decider. I looked up to the stands to find Lara Jean. She was in her normal spot, Kitty by her side with her hands up in the air cheering. The smile could not be stopped. Lara Jean blew a kiss at me and it felt like time slowed down. It felt like this was a movie moment. Something I would remember forever.
We still had to finish the game but we knew how it would end. The whistle blew as the final seconds ticked off the clock and it was another Adler win 3-2. My team met in the middle of the field to celebrate after we shook the hands of our competitors. I was on top of the world.
The crowd was beginning to thin out, but my eyes bolted to the only person I wanted to see right now. I jogged over to the fence where the Coveys were waiting for me with helmet in hand and a smile on my face.
"HE SHOOTS! HE SCORES!" Kitty yelled as I approached them. "Told you I would be a good luck charm."
"I was just trying to impress you." I joked and gave her a quick side hug over the small fence. "You told me if we didn't win, you wouldn't let me date Lara Jean."
"Well aren't we all glad you did your job." She retorted with a smug look on her face. I laughed and turned my body to my girlfriend. "Hey angel." One hand went behind her head and lead our lips together for a quick passionate kiss.
She pulled away after the kiss and smiled. Her eyes were still fluttering open. "Back at you, All-star." I think I felt my heart flip. I'm pretty sure her smile could secure world peace. It was that magnanimous. "I think Kitty's obsessed with lacrosse now."
I turned back to the younger Covey. "Oh REALLY?"
"It just doesn't stop. You just keep going. Now I get why LJ says you run all the time." I watched LJ smile proudly at her. "Plus, it's fun when you knock people down."
"KITTY!" Lara Jean rolled her eyes at her sister and both of us started laughing. What can I say? I did love checking someone when the play called for it.
