Chapter 15 - Why bother rekindling ashes?
She was startled out of her memory train when the doorbell rang. Her hands trembled after seeing who it was from the peeping hole. The bell rang again when there was no response, his attitude showing his confidence that she would be in.
She could have just let him continue ringing the doorbell until he gave up. But her ears were not willing to be subjected to the noise abuse. If she continued ignoring him, her neighbors might just come out to see what was going on.
She released a deep breath before opening the door, letting her eyes take in his simple shirt and casual slack pants. And she hated herself for finding him handsome.
"What are you doing here?" Ashley blocked him from marching into her apartment. "Let's go in and talk. You don't want your neighbors to hear everything, do you?"
Just as he said that, she saw the door of her opposite neighbor slowly open. She did not want to air her dirty laundry to her neighbors, so she let him in with annoyance. He took his time to look around her house that she had bought with her own savings.
"You got a nice place."
"Thank you."
"Not offering me a drink, Ashley?"
"I only do that for my invited guests."
He chuckled and took a seat on the single-seater without any restraint that a first-time guest would have. "I am not thirsty anyway."
"Why are you here?" Ashley demanded, crossing her arms and glaring down at him.
"You know why I'm here. You can't run away from me forever, Ashley."
"Can't you just give up? Things between us have ended."
"I can't give you up, Ashley. I made the biggest mistake four years ago, and I won't do it again. This time I won't let you go, even if I have to do anything to make sure I won't lose you."
"You must, Sean. What about Jean? Does she know what you are doing behind her back?" She asked sarcastically.
"Jean only loves Mason."
Ashley snorted. "So you are saying she is having an affair with Mason behind your back? Wow, and you still haven't divorced her with that temper of yours? Who are you trying to lie to, huh?"
"No one. Jean has always loved him, even before marrying me."
"What?" Ashley stared incredulously at the calm-looking Sean. "Did you just admit you willingly married a woman that does not love you? I never knew you were that generous!"
"I did not know about it until a few months back."
"... Okay." Ashley shook her head to clear her mind. "If you claim your wife loves Mason, why did she marry you instead of him?"
"Her parents don't want her to be with Mason."
Why not? Mason is a nice guy, and a good-looking one as well. He's a good catch and looks like a corporate guy that earns huge figures every year."
"Well, I can attest that he does earn huge figures every year, with decent bonuses." Sean suddenly stood up and pulled her into his arms domineeringly. "If I didn't know you don't have that kind of feeling for Mason, I would be very jealous."
Ignoring her fiercely beating heart from his sudden move, Ashley smacked his shoulder. "Release me!"
He rubbed his cheek against her neck, and she could not suppress her shiver. She always liked it when he rubbed her neck with his cheek like a cat, and he knew that very well.
