Chapter 17 - You dared to be confident in your trashy cooking?
That was her father's personal dish!
Mr. Summer loved to experiment with new dishes, but this dish was the one he was most proud of.
No one would point out that Gio had copied it when nobody knew about it. It was delicious, and it took too much time and concentration to prepare it. That was why Mr. Summer only made it on special family occasions and did not add it to their restaurant's menu.
She glanced at her phone and had half a mind to call her family to stop them from watching the TV. But even if she could hide it this time, she could not hide it forever.
Gio would never let the news die down.
Ashley could only helplessly watch as the judges tasted the appetizer and main dishes. Her heart sank in despair when their expressions showed how pleased they were with what they tasted. It was hard to watch as the judges tossed out compliments after compliments.
Strangely, Sean was quiet throughout the whole tasting.
What was he thinking?
Finally, the time to taste the dessert arrived. She had to drink some water to cool down her temper, which barely worked. She accidentally knocked her knee against the coffee table when she moved to grab the remote control to raise the volume.
Even if she despised it, she wanted to listen properly.
Her father had once made 'Winter's Breath' for Gio to taste when their relationship had more or less headed towards the idea of marriage.
It must have been around that time when Gio asked Mr. Summer for that recipe.
"I can almost imagine I'm in a very cold place from the first bite. The name is very suitable. The presentation is absolutely marvelous. Very refreshing, Aiolos," the first judge, Hollock, nodded with approval.
"This is the first time in many years that I could finally witness another chef that could carve such detailed art from a winter melon! The taste of this winter melon with mint and honey... amazing. I could find no fault in this dish," the second judge, Mark, praised with an excited quiver of his shoulders.
Sean was staring at the dish silently, and her hope of seeing Gio humiliated was crushed. Winter's Breath was utterly mouth-watering and was one of the best desserts that she had ever tasted, even if it was through rose tinted glasses. The taste was enough to calm down the summer heat and her battered soul.
Surely Gio was not able to copy the exact taste of her father's dish? Even with the recipe, it was impossible to replicate the original taste. However, even if Gio could not, it was already enough to amaze the judges. Especially the winter melon carving of a white tree emitting cold mist.
"Mr. Donovan? Is there something wrong with the dessert?" the host prompted when Sean had yet to make a move to taste it.
Ashley let out a choked sound when Sean cut off a branch and took a bite of the winter melon. There was no change of expression when he placed his silverware down without a word or even taking a second bite.
Was he too amazed by the taste? But from the previous videos of his food tasting, when he took a bite and stopped, it meant that the dish was not good enough.
Not only Ashley, but the crowd that knew about Sean's habit also noticed it. They dared not make a sound, patiently waiting for his verdict. Even Ashley unconsciously slowed down her breathing. The other two judges that were staring at Sean started to frown subtly, as their plates were empty with no leftovers.
