Chapter 6 – Could her heart be masochistic?
"I had not asked if Sean's okay or not. Instead, I keep on asking about you."
Ashley laughed in relief, relieved that he did not suspect anything between them. Being known as the ex-wife was not anything embarrassing, but she did not want it to be known for as long as possible.
Sean cut in with a stiff tone. "I'm fine. It's time for you to go."
Ashley was taken aback by Sean's unfriendly tone that was borderline rude. "Sean! He's just here to return something of yours."
Kyle laughed, not offended by Sean's attitude. He must be quite close to Sean to be willing to endure his attitude. "I will obediently leave now so you can rest. Here, you can have your book back. See you again, Sean, Ashley. If you need help, just ring the bell!"
Sean looked satisfied as he watched Kyle walk back towards his house, which was just opposite of his. He strolled into the kitchen after closing the door, no doubt searching for food, as he used to always eat whenever he got free time.
Ashley used to complain about his perfect figure even after eating so much food, but he would always brush it off with a laugh, telling her he would still love her no matter how heavy she became.
She did not get the chance to find out if he meant it.
With a soft sigh, she followed Sean into the kitchen. Things would get back to normal once his memories or his family returned. Then she could go back to her life.
But after living two days with Sean, Ashley felt as if two, long weeks had passed instead!
At this moment, Ashley wished to go home and leave Sean alone to deal with himself. These two days felt like torture to her. Sean would try every move to grab her attention, and honestly, it was working... only a little bit!
He was acting exactly like the man that she had first fallen for. A sweet, protective, and caring man with a dash of possessiveness to spice things up.
Sean was shameless enough to use every excuse to touch her, and to her dismay, her defenses were slowly breaking down. How could she still crave his touch when he was the man who had broken her heart into pieces? Till now, that wound had yet to heal completely.
Could her heart be masochistic?
"Let's go to the beach," Sean suggested, his arms wrapped around Ashley's waist from behind while she busied herself with cooking.
"No," Ashley snapped and wriggled out of his arms. "Can't you see that I'm cooking? Don't distract me!"
Sean raised an eyebrow at Ashley's depressing attempt at cooking. He eyed the messy lasagna in front of her. It was too much cheese, too little tomato sauce, and the meat was too chunky. "We are not eating this. Didn't Betty make us lunch before she left?"
Betty, a very nice woman with ten grandchildren, seemed like she had been working forever for the Donovan's household. Ashley had met Betty before when Sean brought her to their new house when they were still married. They quickly became friends, and Ashley had joked that Betty would not need to worry about losing her job after their marriage with how bad Ashley's cooking was.
Much to Ashley's surprise, Betty appeared last night instead of Ashley's guess that she had retired. Her husband had just passed from cancer, and wished to be buried back at his hometown. Betty had changed a lot since the last time Ashley saw her, with their last meeting was her walked out of the house with her luggage while holding back her tears.
With the added stress of her husband's illness and passing, Betty had lost most of her weight and looked older than her actual age.
When Ashley finally gathered her courage and asked Betty about Jean, the older lady grinned slyly at Ashley. "You want to know more about your competitor?"
Shocked that Betty would think that way, Ashley quickly denied it, but Betty stubbornly refused to believe her. She even wished her luck and offered Ashley assistance to get Sean back. The conversation had gotten so out of hand that Ashley quickly changed the topic.
Seeing that Betty was still tired from the trip, Ashley insisted she rest. Betty stared at Ashley with amusement when she offered to make lunch and did not stop her despite knowing that the lunch would be a failure.
Ashley was confident with her lasagna, with the ingredients adjusted to her own taste. She was about to put it into the oven, but Sean quickly grabbed the lasagna and tossed it into the dustbin.
"What are you doing? That's our lunch!" Ashley exclaimed in horror and moved to rescue her lasagna, but Sean pulled her back.
"No, it's not." Pulling Ashley along, Sean walked towards the refrigerator and pulled out a nicely made and larger sized lasagna. "Betty knows you are going to make an inedible lasagna, so she prepared this in advance."
Ashley shot him a glare. "It's not even baked yet. How do you know if it's not inedible?"
Sean reheated the lasagna. "I know."
"And that is food wastage!"
"I'm saving us from suffering diarrhea. It will take a while for this to be baked."
"Where are we going?" Sean had pulled them out of the kitchen after leaving the lasagna under the timer's watch.
"Watch a movie while waiting for our lunch." Sean had them sit on a couch, side by side, with him practically plastered against Ashley.
"Let me go!" Ashley struggled to pull away, her body feeling out of sorts against the warmth radiating from his body. But he was stronger than her, and her movement allowed her to accidentally feel his still amazing biceps that exposed his habits of exercising.
"Sit still." Sean switched on the movie, not looking at her but making no move to put a distance between them.
Ashley narrowed her eyes at him. "You had planned this!"
Sean smirked in response and pulled Ashley closer to him until they were practically snuggling. "So what if I did?"
Ashley punched his arm, which surprisingly packed enough power that it shocked Sean into loosening his hold, letting her escape. She quickly scooted to the other end of the couch, eyeing him warily.
Sean stared at Ashley in doubt. "You said you didn't hate me."
"I will if you continue doing things that I don't want you to!"
"You have someone back home?"
Ashley was bewildered at the question. "Why did you ask that all of a sudden?"
"You wouldn't have refused me if you were still single."
Ashley's anger rose again at how full Sean was of himself. "You don't think I would remain single, do you? I will have you know that I've been dating and was proposed to." She felt thrilled at seeing his shocked face. "And I've accepted it."
What Ashley said was the truth, except that the engagement had failed. That experience left a scar on her already wounded heart and left her with zero desire to get involved with men in a relationship anymore.
Lust was a different case.
