Alice waited at the front gates just like Ophelia had said. She didn't even see Ophelia come out the doors before she felt a tap on her shoulder. Alice quickly turned to see Ophelia smiling at her, "shall we?" She said holding out her hand which Alice held onto. "Shouldn't you tell your mother where you are?" Alice asked as Ophelia didn't seem like she was bothered about going home to let her mother know she was going out.
"It's fine, she's used to me staying out late."
"Oh, with your friends?"
"Sure."
They carried on walking until they reached Alice's house, she opened the door and invited Ophelia inside. "Heyy Alice, how was school?" Her father asked as he walked out of the kitchen. "It was good, I made a friend." She replied, motioning over to Ophelia who was standing awkwardly besides her. "I see, it's nice to meet you, uh..?"
"Ophelia."
"Ophelia. That's a nice name, don't get many people called that." He smiled and Ophelia awkwardly smiled back. His voice sounded like Ophelia's fathers, it was the first thing she noticed about him. There was a moment of silence between them before Alice broke it with a deep breath "well, we're going out. We're going in the field out the back."
"Alright well have fun, it was lovely meeting you Ophelia." Ophelia nodded before taking Alice's hand and following her out to the field. The hill that Alice had mentioned was quite far in the distance but she didn't mind the walk. Alice was talking the whole time, Ophelia wasn't quite sure what she was talking about but she listened anyway. Usually people who talked a lot annoyed her but Alice's voice was easy to listen to, and she was clearly an intelligent person. The field was pretty, it was full of different kinds of flowers, mainly bluebells. Alice stopped for a moment before picking a bluebell and placing it behind her ear in her hair and turning to Ophelia, smiling with her arms outstretched. "How do I look?" Ophelia looked at her and nodded. "Uh yeah, nice." She replied with a small awkward laugh at the end. Alice chuckled at her before grabbing Ophelia's hand again and continuing to walk, starting to walk up the hill. Honestly Alice wasn't used to doing so much walking, "I probably should've..picked a..smaller hill." She said in between breaths. Ophelia laughed, Alice really was something else. Alice had once seemed so shy but now Ophelia could see that wasn't the case, she was actually quite confident considering Ophelia was new to her. Maybe Alice's confidence would rub off on her.
"Finally!" Alice laughed out as she lied down on the grass at the top of the hill, underneath the willow tree. Ophelia hesitated a moment before laying next to her. "So where do you live Ophelia?" Alice asked her. She was so soft spoken, Ophelia never really liked her name but the way Alice said it in her gentle voice was making her begin to love the sound of it. "I live right next to the school." Alice sat up a bit, supporting herself with her arms. "What?" Ophelia asked her, questioning her shocked look. "You're telling me you live right next to the school and still managed to be late!?" She said laughing in a shocked tone. Ophelia joined in her laughter. "I woke up late." She could barely speak through her laughter. Alice playfully shook her head and smiled before looking out into the distance, Ophelia sat up next to her and followed her gaze, both of them just sitting in comfortable silence.Ophelia thought Alice looked so pretty in her white shirt, even if it was just a school one. Alice had taken her blazer off, the white shirt matched her pale skin and hair perfectly. Ophelia quickly shut out those thoughts, they weren't good to think, her mother had warned her about intrusive thoughts like those, they weren't right.
"It's so pretty here." Ophelia said snapping herself out of her thoughts. She wasn't so nervous anymore, the presence of Alice calmed her somehow. "It's my favourite place." Alice said with a smile "I came here yesterday after church to just sit and think, I might just come up here whenever I'm sad." She said as she smiled at Ophelia more. Ophelia couldn't imagine Alice sad, she didn't seem like the type of person to be, but everyone gets sad so of course Alice would be sometimes. Again silence fell between them for a while, but it wasn't awkward silence, it was peaceful. It was the type of silence that doesn't have to be broken because it's not uncomfortable."So, you were at church...do you believe in a god?" Alice asked. Ophelia lied back down on the grass staring up at the sky. He family had always been religious but to be honest she had never thought about it like that before. She went to church and she'd heard the stories but she'd never stopped to ask her self if she believed in it. "I think that's a question for a different day." She finally said breaking the silence that the question had left. Alice nodded, Ophelia was probably just as conflicted as she was, never quite knowing what it believe. It's not that Alice didn't believe, she just didn't necessarily believe, she was indifferent. She liked the idea of having faith in something, she just wasn't sure if it's something she wanted in her life.
The pair sat a while longer until the sun started to set, they figured they better start heading home before it got too dark. Ophelia's mother was not going to be happy, she never approved of her staying out late but Ophelia did it anyway. "Well," Alice said as they stood in front of her house "I'll see you tomorrow I guess." Ophelia nodded before waving goodbye and heading home. Her mother was not going to be happy, but honestly nothing could ruin her good mood. She finally had a good time with a good friend, she couldn't be happier.
