"What do you think happens after death?" Alice asked out of nowhere. Ophelia thought for a moment. "I don't think anything happens after death, I think it's the same as before you're born. You don't exist, and then you do, and then you just don't exist again." Alice nodded and they both went silent for a moment. "Then what's the point of existence if in reality it's such a small point in time? Our lives are practically nothing." Alice spoke up causing Ophelia to think for a while. "I think our lives are everything. The fact that the chances of us being born are so slim, and we're here, against all the odds. And compared to the nothingness of death, we are all bursting with life, we are experiencing the world and I think that we need to make the most of it." She said with a happy sign, feeling content with the answer she gave.
"But what's the point if it all ends and means nothing?"
"I don't think there is a point..and I'm not sure there needs to be. The point of making the most of life, is the fact that there is no point to it but we're getting to live it anyway."
They sat in silence once again, it was getting dark and the stars were out. Alice's parents knew where they were but Ophelia's mother didn't, but honestly in that moment she didn't really care. All that she cared about was Alice. Thinking about how slim the chances of them even existing are, let alone at the same time, she was great full."What do you want to be when you grow up?" Ophelia asking the question this time. Alice didn't even have to think before answering. "I want to write, not that anyone would read anything I wrote, nothing makes me special." She said, starting to sound sadder as her sentence came to an end. "I reckon you'd be a great writer, one of the best."
"Please, no one would read my silly old books." Alice laughed not believing Ophelia one bit.
"I'd love to read your silly old books." Ophelia laughed, she was telling the truth, Alice was intelligent, even her English essays were works of art. Ophelia really believed that Alice could be a great writer one day, maybe she could write about them.
"What about you?" Alice returned the question. "When I grow up, I don't really know what I want to do, I just want to be happy. Happy with someone, and maybe a cat or two, in a little house in the middle of nowhere." They both smiled at her answer, that did sound peaceful. "Maybe you could be happy with me? We get a cat, and we live in the middle of nowhere." They both chuckled, honestly it would be nice. It would be great if they remained friends into adulthood, now they were friends they couldn't imagine not being together.A few moments passed before Alice asked another question that had been on her mind.
"Your mother hates me doesn't she?" Alice asked sadly. "I wish I could say no." Ophelia replied also sounding more sad than before. It was true, she wished that her mother liked Alice or would at least give her a chance. "Maybe if she met me?"
"Alice she can't, she's made up her mind about you and I know it's not fair but she won't even give you a chance." Alice signed, she knew Ophelia was right but the truth is, Alice really liked her and she wanted to do normal friend things like go to her house. Alice didn't want to hide, she didn't want to be hidden. "Can we try?" She asked, her voice making a soft, sad crack on the last word. Ophelia looked over at Alice who had a tear in her eye that she was desperate not to let fall. "Okay..we can try." She replied before giving Alice a soft smile. "Thank you, I can come home with you today, if we surprise her then she can't say no." Alice said happily, standing up and holding out her hand to help Ophelia up. "Great plan." Ophelia laughed as she took hold of Alice's hand and pulled herself up. Ophelia was scared that this wasn't a great idea but she could tell that for whatever reason, it meant a lot to Alice that her mother at least tries to get to know her and like her. Who knows? Maybe they'll get along.
