Chapter 3 | Life or Death
[3rd Person]
Scars littered the entire body of the black bear hybrid. There wasn't a single location on his body that was smooth. His injuries caused him unimaginable pain, so much so that he didn't think he was going to make it. But his pain reminded him that he was indeed alive and that it couldn't get any worse. They were living in hell, there was no way anything would be worse than how they were living currently.
Next to the black bear hybrid, in the cage, was a black lion hybrid. With each painful groan that escaped the black bear hybrid's lips, the black bear hybrid's eyebrows furrowed deeper and deeper. There was nothing he could do for his older mate.
The black bear hybrid and the black lion hybrids were very rare breeds, perhaps that was the reason why they were Nana's favourites.
Being Nana's favourites had both positives and negatives.
One of the biggest positives of being Nana's favourite hybrids was the fact that their small pack was able to stay together in the cages. There were many other hybrids who were mated but weren't allowed to be in a cage together. Neither the black lion hybrid nor the black bear hybrid could imagine having to fight in the rings then going into their separate cages without even the smallest bit of comfort from their mates. So being placed together was the one saving grace of their life.
Another positive of being Nana's favourite was that the black bear hybrid and the black lion hybrid hardly ever participated in the fights.
The biggest negative of being nana's favourites was that when a VIP was watching the fights, they always fought. Nana loved to parade around the two hybrids as they were the best fighters she owned. As a result, the hybrids were forced to fight the most dangerous hybrids and the youngest hybrids. There were many times the black bear hybrid thought he was going to die from the fights.
The most recent fight that the black bear hybrid participated in was against a young cheetah hybrid. How the black bear hybrid survived was anyone's guess. It really looked as if the hybrid was going to lose, but somehow ended up being the victor. He won but he was badly injured, almost an inch away from death.
Nana laughed loudly when the fight was finished. She loudly boasted that this was the reason she liked the black bear hybrid so much. She then got the medics to come and take a look at his state and was glad that the black bear hybrid was to live another day.
When the black bear hybrid returned to his cage, his mate couldn't say anything. The black lion hybrid was speechless as he saw all the scars.
"Hyung," the black lion said softly as if he didn't want to disturb the older hybrid. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine, Namjoon," the black bear responded giving Namjoon a weak smile but he couldn't help but grunt at the pain he was in. Then the hybrid chuckled breathly. "You know, if you keep frowning like that, you're going to look older than I am."
"I can't help it," Namjoon responded quietly.
"The others aren't back yet?" The black bear hybrid sighed at the lack of warmth in the cage.
Namjoon shook his head. His head was full of worry. Worry for his eldest mate who just escaped death, worry for his other mates who would be fighting a different type of battle, and finally, worry for their entire pack living in such terrible conditions never knowing what day would be their last.
"We'll get out," the black bear hybrid said quietly but firmly, almost as if he could hear the black lion's thoughts.
"Hyung, it's a suicide mission," Namjoon hissed. "We'll die if we try to escape."
"Does it matter?" The elder hybrid asked with a shrug. "We'll either die from the fights or die getting out. At least we have a chance to live if we try to escape."
Namjoon was quiet, his tail moving tensely. The older hybrid had a point. They were standing at the boundary between life and death. One day, because of a bad move they made, they could die fighting the other more dangerous and younger hybrids. If there was even a glimmer of hope, Namjoon would take it.
"Don't drag your feet!" A voice caused the two hybrids to turn their attention to the door that was still not open.
Once the door was opened, they saw that all the hybrids that went to the basement were back. Namjoon and his mate were able to spot their four mates. Looking like they lost a bit of their soul as they trudged over to the cage.
The cage door opened and the four mates were pushed in. The humans didn't bother to care if the hybrids hurt themselves while being shoved into the cage.
"Yoongi hyung!" The four hybrids who just came back exclaimed once they saw the state the black bear hybrid was in.
"I'm fine," Yoongi reassured the younger hybrids. "Are you guys okay?"
"Yeah," the wolf hybrid answered quietly.
"Jimin?" Namjoon checked on the red panda hybrid.
"I'm alright, hyung," Jimin, the red panda hybrid, responded giving the older hybrid a tired smile.
"What about you, Taehyung?" Namjoon asked, now moving to check the status of the golden retriever hybrid.
"It was rough, but I'm alright," the golden retriever said with a smile. "Jungkook-ie got the worst of it today."
"Come here bun," Yoongi said stretching his arm out to the youngest member of their pack.
Wordlessly, the bunny hybrid went and hugged Yoongi. The younger hybrid began scenting the older hybrid as a way to calm himself down from the terrible situation he was in moments ago.
"What about you?" The wolf hybrid asked Namjoon, who had fresh claw marks on his body.
"I'm fine, Hoseok," Namjoon nodded. "I'm just worried about Yoongi hyung. He barely made it this time. I don't know--"
"We'll be alright," Yoongi cut Namjoon off. "Call it a gut feeling, but we're going to get out of this hell hole."
"Really?" Jungkook asked, his voice quiet.
"Really," Yoongi's voice was firm as if he truly believed in what he said. "We're getting out of here."
Not needing any prompts, Jimin and Taehyung cuddled into Yoongi and Jungkook. Their tails wrapped around each other, trying to keep each other safe and warm from the colder temperature of the metal cage.
Hoseok looked to Namjoon. The wolf worried about his friend and mate. Namjoon always had the habit of overthinking. It was a part of the black lion hybrid that he couldn't change, but it was what kept them from doing anything rash that might put their lives at risk.
"Namjoon-ah," Hoseok said softly, causing the Namjoon's ears to flicker. "Don't overthink it. Let's just have hope that we will get out of here, just like what hyung said."
Namjoon nodded slowly. "I just can't help it," Namjoon admitted. "Let's say we do get out of here. Where would we go? It's not like we're going to be able to go out into the world when we know nothing about it."
"Let's tackle one problem at a time," Hoseok suggested. "We'll figure that out when we get to it. Besides, we can overcome anything together."
Hoseok grabbed Namjoon's hand, giving it a little pat. Hoping to comfort the black lion hybrid to the best of his ability.
"Together," Namjoon agreed.
