Xiao and Aether fell asleep after a long day, dealing with the Order left them drained. Aether cried himself to sleep in Xiao's arms after losing his sister. Xiao hadn't planned on sleeping and wanted to stay up but he too passed out.
Hours later, it was around two in the morning, and the room was quiet and calm. The curtains flapped in the wind from the window being left open. Aether was sleeping in Xiao's arms still snuggled closely together until Xiao was startled awake by Aether who was screaming and pushed Xiao away from him.
"No!! Please stop!!.... Don't take away my memories, I don't want to forget him!" Aether screamed out, Aether was frantically swinging his arms around in his sleep.
"Aether!" Xiao yelled as he sat up and grabbed Aether's hands. "Aether stop! It's just a nightmare!"
"Wha...Oh...I'm sorry..." Aether rasped out after he opened his eyes. His breathing was heavy and sweat covered his face. Tears streamed down his face as he looked at Xiao.
"It's ok Aether...I'm right here..." Xiao whispered out, Xiao laid back down. He wrapped his arms around Aether, pulling him close to his chest.
"S-Sorry..." Aether apologized again, he listened to Xiao's heart, he felt Xiao kiss him on his forehead.
"Shh...Please go back to sleep. I'm not going anywhere." Xiao spoke softly.
'His heartbeat...and the warmth from his body...and his smell...I still remember all of it...' Aether thought. Xiao's heartbeat was helping him calm down from the nightmare he just had, then Xiao started humming a lullaby as he gently ran his fingers through his hair.
Xiao continued to hum the lullaby until Aether finally stopped crying and drifted back to sleep. Xiao let out a sigh as he continued holding Aether tightly, he wiped away the tears that covered his face.
'I hope he can recover from all this...I hate seeing him in so much pain...I don't want his light to fade away.' Xiao thought to himself as he listened to Aether sleeping.
"I love you Aether...more than you'll ever know," Xiao whispered before falling back to sleep.
*The next morning*
Xiao was awake before Aether, he got out of bed quietly and left the room. He was walking down the stairs to the front desk area when he ran into Amber and Bennett along with Paimon, they noticed Xiao walking down the stairs and greeted him.
"Hey Xiao, how's Aether? He seemed a little distant yesterday. Is he ok?" Amber asked as he approached.
"I'm not sure, he had a nightmare last night..." Xiao answered, he looked down at the floor.
"I wouldn't blame him. Pretty scary stuff he went through, just glad you rescued him before it was too late." Bennett chimed in.
"Not to mention he just lost his sister," Paimon added. "This can't be easy for him. Give him time I'm sure he'll be back to normal soon enough. I know! Cause Paimon has been his travel buddy for some time now and he usually bounces back fast."
"How can you be so sure? He's lost his only sibling...something I can never replace." Xiao asked.
"Because he has you, Xiao." This time Verr Goldet spoke up from behind the counter catching their attention.
"You can't replace his sister but the love you have for him is genuine. He needs you, Xiao, now more than ever, he'll smile again in no time if you're there. I'm sure of it."
"Agreed." The others said together.
"Thanks, everyone," Xiao replied. A small smile crossed his face.
