Tw // death, cemeteries, implied suicide
Player knelt down, taking a shaky breath. He instinctively touched the gravestone in front of him as he did, tracing the letters in the middle. The name of the person he loved and missed.
The number. The date, the worst day of Player's life. The difference between the two dates. So much shorter than it should be, than it could be.
The years, between his birth and his death, shorter than how much longer he could have stayed. How much longer he could have been here.
Player cried. It was his first time going to Captain's grave alone. Veteran had gone alone before, but Player couldn't.
"The bed isn't full without you anymore," Player started. "There's just so much empty space. But even if it was filled with something, anything... it wouldn't matter. You're not there so it's empty... everything is so empty. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to heal the hole in my heart when nothing is full. Everything and everyone around me is so empty."
Player thought of holding Captain in his arms. He wanted to so badly. What he wouldn't give to hold him for just a minute.
But he wanted longer than a minute.
Player thought. He wanted longer than a minute. He wanted a lifetime. He wanted the rest of his live. He wanted forever.
Why did he have to beg for scraps, while everyone else got to wake up next to the ones they loved every day? Why is he forced to ask for something so small? Why does he have to beg the universe for just an hour more, a minute more, a second more?
But still, he would give so, so much just to hold him for another minute.
Player sighed and was once again thankful for Veteran. He could hold her. He could kiss him. She was there.
"...Can I tell you a secret, Cap?" Player waited a moment, like he was waiting for a verbal response. He didn't know if, for a second, he truly did think there would be. But he heard it in his head. Captain's voice was still clear in his head, and Captain would have always said yes.
Player looked down slightly. "When I look at Veteran... sometimes, actually most of the time. When I look at her, I just want her to be you," his voice broke.
"I feel bad for it, but I know she thinks the same. We both miss you so much. It's not that I would rather her be gone than you. It's just that I want you here with me so much."
Another wave of pain moves through Player and he cries out again. He was never gonna see Captain again.
"Why did you do this!" Player begged Captain to answer. "You knew we'd be sad... you told me before you'd tell me if I ever wanted to do it... but you didn't. If only you'd just told me. Why couldn't you have kept your promise!"
Player basically fell even more to his hands and knees. He looked down at the grass, which only looked like a blur. "I miss you! I want nothing more than you for to come home! Please! Wake up! Nothing is happy anymore! Even if it was I'd just want to share it with you! Please I'm begging you... wake up... please. Please... if you're tired just stay in my arms forever... I'm here... if you want to come back, I'm still here... why did you leave... why...." his voice slowly lowered until he was barely whispering.
Player felt his heart break over and over. He wanted Captain back so much. He just wanted him back. It felt like such a simple request, but he couldn't have him. He breathed shakily and stared at the ground.
What he wouldn't do, what he wouldn't give, for just another minute... for such a small courtesy in all this pain.
