I had dressed in the first thing I found in my closet. I didn't look lazy but not too dressed up either. Green shirt and sweatpants. I mean, it was Saturday and unless mom and dad had plans for today which they hadn't said anything, I didn't want to make an effort, specially brushing my wild hair. I could easily straighten it up with a thought but... ugh, thinking.

I rolled my eyes at my reflection. Now that I wasn't laughing with my brother, my hair was no longer purple but my natural color, which was brown and slighty curly. I huffed, a strand of hair falling in front of my face. I picked up a brush and began to brush strand by strand. My hazel brown eyes which also was my natural color (a feature shared in all the family) were calmly following the motion as I imagined that movie of this girl whose hair was magical and every time she brushed it, more magic came out of it.

When I finished, I lowered the brush and smiled contently, tilting my head aside. A wild strand hitting my neck. I narrowed my eyes, my eyes' reflection glimmered a bit in red and I took a deep breath, blinking forcefully. There was no point in getting angry if this happened every day.

My beautiful hazel eyes back and I walked out of my room. A heavenly smell hit my nostrils that got my mouth watering. Pancakes! So, mom was already awake. She was the only one daring to cook in this house, so there was no mistaking who was in the kitchen.

Mom was humming under her breath as she cooked and I had to smile as I sat on the counter island, swinging my legs back and forth on the chair.

Claire Grant is her name and as if feeling eyes on her, she turned around, smiling at me. "Sweetie! You're finally awake"

And stating the obvious.

"Obviously no, mum" I spoke sweetly. Mum rolled her eyes "I'm a clone. I came down here to tell you I'm still sleeping and won't wake up until noon" She gave me a disapproving but also unfazed look. I shrugged innocently, "Sorry. But did you have to say the obvious?"

Mum sighed with a kind smile, walking closer and pulling me into a bear hug. "Happy birthday, love"

I returned the hug as much as I could, considering she trapped me within her arms, "Thanks, Mum"

She pulled away, smiling. "Made your favorite. Banana pancakes with whipped cream" She turned around, grabbing a plate with the delicious food and put it in front of me, "Your dad was getting ready when I came down. Apparently, a pair of little devils didn't let him sleep, that's why he had to wake up"

I flashed her an innocent, sweet smile "How rude of them" I shook my head disapprovingly "Not letting people sleep"

With that, mum let out another laugh and turned away, letting me settle my eyes on my precious breakfast, almost devouring it with not so much dinner manners.

I was almost finished when suddenly a pair of hands grabbed my shoulders, shaking me and making me jump with a startled scream. Someone laughed behind me. With a hand on my beating chest, I turned around incredulously toward the culprit, trying to even my breathing, a small almost white strand of hair hitting my face only to find an innocent looking man, my dad standing behind me, hands behind his back, smiling slightly. Mum was next to him, hand covering her mouth and eyes sparkling with amusement.

"Are you trying to kill me?!" I exclaimed. Mum and dad exchanged a look, shrugged at each other and chuckled. "So funny, dad. Really. Getting rid of your beautiful daughter so young"

David Grant, my dad smiled "Don't be dramatic, Kitty. It was hard to resist. Not every day we can find you distracted enough to startle you or prank you"

"I could have gotten a heart attack" I said grumpily but that only served for him to laugh harder.

"I'm sorry, baby" Mum said, brushing my hair back, eyeing the now back to brown hair. "You didn't even sense us coming in. It was hard to resist"

"Whatever" Dad waved his hand dismissively, smiling mischievously "I'm not apologizing. You should have seen your face" I pouted. Dad shook his head but pulled a little box from behind his back "What I am doing is giving you a present. Happy birthday, little devil"

I shrieked in excitement, grabbing the gift from his hands, starting to open it, feeling him kiss the top of my head while I did so.

"You're the best" I grinned up at him, hazel meeting purple. The four of us had the similar shades of brown but Dad and I had exact shades. Well, that when it didn't change. I focused back on the wrapped box and opened it to find a pretty golden bracelet with my name in cursive on it. The "K" had purple flowers at the superior and inferior points and another little flower in the letter "E" at the end of my name. Of course, my full name was Katerina, but nobody called me it, unless they were angry. Which happened a lot constantly, I must admit. "I love it!"

I jumped from my seat and toward my dad's arms, hugging him tightly.

"I'm glad you liked it" Dad said with a chuckle, "Now, Katerina Grant. To your room" he said seriously. I made a face and looked at him confused. He then smiled, winking at me. "You have another present to open"

I jumped in excitement, mock saluting him "Yes, sir. Yes!"

I ran out of the kitchen and up the stairs.

"Be careful and don't run!" Mum yelled.

Oops. Already did.

At the top of the stairs, I stopped abruptly when I came face to face with an angry Mike. "You!" He pointed an accusing finger at my direction. "How many times do I have to tell you to stay away from my shampoo? I've told you to stay away from my bathroom, shortstack"

I pointed at him, laughing at the way his hair stood up and unmoving. Mike rolled his eyes, brushing past me.

"I haven't stepped foot in your bathroom in like a week" I told him in amusement.

Mike stopped walking, turning to face me, crossing his arms. "This didn't happen yesterday. So, what's your excuse?"

I scratched the back of my neck, sheepishly. "That you finished your shampoo and opened the new bottle?" His eyes narrowed. I rocked on my heels, innocently. "Which, I may or not may had hidden it in under the sink?"

He scoffed in realization, "I'm going to kill you"

I gasped, turning on my heels and running toward my room. "Mum! Stop him"

"Come back here, Katerina Grant!"

"Kids! It's too early. Lower your voices"

"Ah, the routine my dear. What would I do without screaming murder in the mornings?"
