Diagon Alley was as magical as I imagined. It took us around three hours to find most of the stuff I'd need for the year and I was certain we didn't even explored a quarter of the Alley.
After a while, mum stopped in an ice cream parlour named Florean Fortescue or something. If muggle flavors (woah, I'll get used to saying muggle, it was an amazing word) were amazing, the flavors in here tasted... magical. Yes, pun intended.
We left at the last to buy my wand. Like dad used to say, the best was better at last.
The owner of Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions where I bought my uniform robes pointed at OLLIVANDERS as the best place to buy my wand when she learned I was a muggleborn. Fortunately, she didn't look at me differently when me and mum stepped in with clearly awe and surprise in our faces when we saw the magic making sewing equipment flying around the shop.
Unfortunately, I was getting a bit of a bad attention from some people when they heard me and my mum talking as if those people didn't like our presence, especially mum's. We tried to ignore them as much as we could but sometimes, I could feel my hair getting curlier at each comment. Fortunately, it wasn't turning red and my eyes remained brown. I didn't want to freak this people out and give them an actual reason to call me names.
I had left mum talking to this nice lady at the ice cream shop. She was a redhead and she had offered to keep my mum company while I told her I wanted to get my wand. She had told us it was some sort of tradition for first years to get their wands alone. She told me she and her daughter who was another redhead girl who looked older than me and had a kind, maternal smile that they'd make sure mum was in good hands.
I was a bit wary of it, not wanting mum to hear another bad word from people when Molly, the other girl told me they wouldn't let that happen. With that reassurance, I left mom with the Prewett girls and made my way toward OLLIVANDER'S.

I had a frown in my face as I neared the shop and it wasn't because it took me a while to find it. No, my frown getting deeper with every step I made was from the crude comments I could hear some people throwing against muggles and muggleborns. There was this other word I found curious but somehow knew was an insult, 'Mudblood' and I could tell it was directed at me, if the scrunches of their nose and the superior glances thrown at me as they lifted their chin as if I was garbage on their feet.
Now that I was alone, I couldn't help but feel the comments stinging that I kinda had to hug my arms over my body and lower my eyes to the ground so I wouldn't look at them. It was easy to pretend it didn't bother me when I was with someone else. Once I reached the shop, my shoulders dropped in relief.
As I walked in, I couldn't help but admire the shelves with a lot of boxes I figured where for the wands. There were several in the desk, some in the floor and all over the shop. So, Mr. Ollivander was a messy worker. A messy organized worker, I corrected in my mind with a slight giggle. I had the feeling he knew exactly where everything was in all this mess.
"Oh, welcome!" I jumped slightly at the voice that seemed to come from everywhere. I looked around, "Over here" I turned my head toward between two shelves to see a short man with grey hair and big expressive eyes giving me a warm grin. I waved slightly. "First wand, isn't it?" he asked, a beat in his step as he walked closer. I raised an eyebrow. How did he know? "Excellent. I think I have exactly what you need, Miss Grant!"
He turned around making me gape at him in shock.
Er.. How did he know my name??
"Er, that's what I hope, Mr. Ollivander" I said kindly, trying to ignore the fact he knew my name. That was mysterious and magical. I wonder if that's why Mrs. Prewett insisted I'd come alone.
