Night had fallen over the city. It was calm, peaceful, even a bit quiet as no one seemed to be out in the streets. As most people settled in for bed in their homes, though, one person was walking quietly through the town, having a destination besides home to get to.

Charlie walked with his arms wrapped around him slightly. There was a small lake just outside the city, he visited there every night he could. This night was particularly cold, but he didn't mind it too much. He was made of slime, so the cold didn't really affect him as much as the average human.

Arriving the the lake he made his way over and slowly sat on one of the benches. It was quiet there, the only noise being the leaves rustling on a few trees as the wind blew by.

He sat there patiently, waiting quietly as he rested his hands in his lap. They would be there soon, hopefully. They always were, and rarely ever missed one of the meetings the two of them had.

Staring at the water, Charlie felt alone for a moment. The reflection of the stars on the rippling water caught his attention, whenever he waited he always liked to watch the stars. Even though they were the same almost every night, they were still so amazing and breathtaking to him.

Suddenly a cold chill hit Charlie, but instead of shivering he only smiled, lifting his gaze to look up and over to his friend.

"Hello Y/N of the lake!" He said excitedly as he looked at the ghostly figure now sitting next to him on the bench.

Y/N was a ghost. All they really told Charlie was that they had drowned in the lake a few years back. Both of them suspected it was a murder, but poor Y/N barely remembered any of the details, so they couldn't remember how or why it happened.

A smile formed on Y/N's face as they looked at Charlie. They glowed a misty blue color, their hair and clothes always looking soaked, while water droplets dripped from their arms, legs, and face.

It was a way to indicate how they died. Well, that was Charlie's guess, anyway. Either way, it made him feel a bit bad knowing they had to stay like that for who knows how long.

"How have you been since yesterday?" Charlie asked with a big smile, he always loved hearing about what they saw during the day. At night was the only real time they could come out and roam, but usually during the day their soul was trapped in the lake, only able to watch the things that happened around it.

They sat in silence for a moment as they stared down at the lake. "It's been okay.." They said softly. Their voice always had an echoey tone to it. "A few people came by the lake today. Most of their faces were familiar, but I didn't know any names.."

Kicking his legs slightly, Charlie gave a bright smile. "Really? I didn't think anyone visited the lake much.."

"I didn't think so, either, but most of them just seemed to be passing by.." They said softly, beginning to run their fingers down the wood of the bench.

Hearing this made Charlie frown a bit, he felt bad that no one else came to visit the lake during the daytime. He would do it himself, but usually he was extremely busy. The only time he usually got to visit was at night.

"Well, I promise no matter what, I'll always come to visit you whenever I have the time!" He smiled. "Though I am free during most nights, so I always plan on coming around the time to see you." He sat up a bit, watching his ghostly friend in silence for a moment.

Despite enjoying Charlie's company, Y/N wasn't much of a talker. Most nights they sat in silence, listening to Charlie talk about everything. The people he met, the work he did, the adventures he had.. it made Y/N happen that their friend could do so many things, yet it made them feel upset that they couldn't do the same.

Watching quietly, Charlie began to notice a few water droplets rolling off of their arms, watching as they slowly dripped off and splashed onto the bench, before slowly disappearing. He couldn't help but notice Y/N watching it, too, frowning as each droplet fell off.

"Hey, I drip, too!" He said quickly, looking up at Y/N's face, causing them to look up, too. Seeing their look of confusion, Charlie quickly held his arm up, showing some of the slime droplets the rolled down his arm.

Their eyes watched his arms carefully, before they looked back at their arms, then back to Charlie's. ".. How does that work..?" They asked softly, a bit curious.

Giving a small shrug, Charlie's smile grew slightly. "I don't know, I guess whenever I produce too much, it just rolls off. But hey, I'm not ashamed of it! I think it gives me detail, for who I am, and such.." He looked back at them, sitting up a bit. "I don't think your water droplets are weird or anything.. I think they give you detail! Extra character, or something like that! It's cool.."

Hearing all this made Y/N smile. Charlie was good at that. Making them smile. Whether it was from some silly old joke or the cool stories he would tell, he always knew a way to put a smile on their face.

But this time, it was different. The dim, blueish aura around Y/N grew a bit, it's color brightening slowly as their smile grew. It was like he gave them positive energy in a way. He lit up their world.

"You think I'm.. cool?" Y/N asked, their smile remaining on their face.

Quickly nodding, Charlie smiled brightly. Seeing them so happy made him happy, too. "Of course! You're one of the coolest people I've ever met!"

"But you've met so many people before.. and I'm.. one of the coolest?" Y/N's eyes sparkled a bit.

Smiling, Charlie looked down and placed his hand on top of their's. It made him feel instantly cold and caused him to shiver slightly, but he could tolerate it. He looked at them and smiled. "Of course!" He smiled.

The two proceeded to stay together for a few more hours. Thankfully Charlie didn't really need to sleep, so he didn't get tired while sitting with them.

Y/N was a lot more talkative that night, and that's what made Charlie a lot happier. He loved being able to talk to them, hearing whatever they had to offer.

Sadly though the night soon had to come to an end as the sun began to rise. Charlie quickly stood up, a sigh escaping his lips. "Right, I need to get going.." He smiled and looked at Y/N. "Same time right here tomorrow..?"

"Of course.." Y/N said softly, slowly standing up and staring at the water of the lake. "I promise I won't be late."

"It's fine if you are, I'll always wait for you." Charlie said softly, before beginning to walked off. "Goodbye, Y/N of the lake! I'll see you tomorrow!"

Watching as Charlie walked off, Y/N smiled softly, giving a small wave as they headed back towards the lake. "Goodbye, Charlie.." They smiled. "See you tomorrow."
