Katrina wasn't alright, and the doctor was making it very clear for her and Tom that she was playing with her own health.
"What are you trying to say doctor?" Tom asks while holding onto her hand. He held her tightly trying to reassure her and himself that everything wasn't as bad as it looked.
"Well, you have been playing with your mental health, Katrina," he starts looking at the clipboard. "Your stress levels are very high, your eating habits are all over the place by what you tell me and I must say that if you keep on going with this you'll just get much worse."
The woman sighs feeling her eyes water as she gulps a huge lump in her throat. She was trying to create a balance and she thought she had it.
It seems like her brain thought it had it, but not her body.
"Is there any medicines I need to buy or any kind of tests to run?" Tom sounded so concerned her, his heart wrenched. "Or can she go home?"
The doctor clicks his pen before writing something down on a notepad. "You can start with these pills. They'll give you a good night's sleep."
She shook her head. "But I have a son, and he wakes up in the middle of the night and-"
"I understand, Miss Cameron. But you also need to rest." he sternly tells her.
Tom looks down at her with a frown. "I'll take care of Peter if he wakes. And anything else."
Katrina scoffed. She was surprised at her own actions that she gave Tom a surprised look matching his.
The doctor glanced up at them feeling the tension between the two and his presence being now awkward.
He ripped off the paper. "Here," Tom grabs it. "Make sure to take those on time. Come check on yourself in two weeks, Miss. Have a good night."
The doctor turned and left.
Katrina felt embarrassed at herself that she couldn't look up again at Tom. He heard her scoff and it just made her feel horrible.
"Let's go," his voice was more with a careful edge rather then a soft tone like before. "I'll go pay."
Tom saw his fiancé still looking away from him. He was upset. For more than one reason.
One, she wasn't taking care of her mental health. Two, she didn't seem to believe he could take care of their son.
Katrina nods and allows him to guide her out of the room and towards the lobby where they part ways.
By the time she reached the car, she had malfunctioning wheels in her head. How was she supposed to explain the scoff? That involuntary action she should've kept in her mind.
Tom came not long after and entered the car. He told her that they were all set and that he got the medicine.
Yet, he didn't say another word.
The whole ride Katrina was trying to think how to apologize. How make him feel better and thank him for bringing her.
But her brain was blank.
His expression was blank.
When they reached the house Tom's mom was upstairs probably in Peter's room.
Katrina felt like the silence he was giving her was killing her. "Tom-"
"Do you really think that I can't take care of Peter?" he asks. His words sounded offended.
Katrina bit her lip. "That's not what I intended to let out."
"Then what did you try to scoff at? Because that's what I got." he tells her rubbing his chin as he leans on the table.
Katrina takes a seat on the couch rubbing her hands over her exposed thighs.
"It's just that, it's always me," she hesitated. "I'm the one who's always taking care of Peter. And I don't mean that you are a careless dad. I just think that..."
"That I can't do it?" he pushes making her irritated.
"Tom I didn't mean to! I'm sorry!" she raised her voice feeling pressured, but Tom wasn't stopping.
He clenched his hands into fists. "Katrina! Lower you voice Peter's asleep."
She rubs her temple and has the sudden urge to cry. What was wrong with her? Why was she growing so emotional?
She was usually able to hold longer.
"I didn't mean to, okay," she wipes them off. "I am very sorry."
Tom looked at her. He looked at her from a point of view he sadly didn't see much. He knew Katrina was a strong woman.
But he has been out for so long that he wasn't paying much attention to her serious emotions. She was always greeting him with happy smiles.
But right now all he saw was his future wife a lot more exhausted then what she lets others see.
And here he was making it even harder for her to deal with.
"Love." he calls. He goes to sit beside her but she shakes her head.
"Don't pay me mind. I just need things to take a pause and slow down." she denied him, but Tom stopped her.
He's been letting this go way too far. Much more than needed. "No. You need to rest," he puts his hands over her shoulders. "Truly rest."
