You were sick of it. The way she was looking at your fiance was getting on your last nerves. Her hand rested on his arm, a smile tugging at her lips as she whispered something in his ear. You twisted your engagement ring around your finger, watching as your future husband seemed to enjoy her company. You could feel your teeth gritting when he leaned into her to reply to whatever it was she had whispered. You noticed her eyes flickering over to where you were sitting before her lips curled into a smirk for a brief second before fading back into a smile as John cast a look at her. Her fingers drummed a random rhythm on his arm as the two continued conversing. You cleared your throat, smiling gently at the two other Shelby's you were sitting with, excusing yourself to step outside. You wrapped your fur coat around yourself as you made your way outside, casting a glare towards the back of John's head as you passed where he was sitting, ignoring Lizzie as you did.
What you didn't see was John's confused look as he watched you leave, and Lizzie excusing herself as well, following behind you with a smirk on her face. As you leaned against the brick of the building, you dug your hands through your coat pockets, pulling out a cigarette and a box of matches. You brought the cig into your mouth, quickly lighting it and inhaling deeply. You held the smoke in your lungs as Lizzie stood next to you, pulling out her own cig and turning towards you, lips still curled in a smirk. "Got a light?" She asked, voice on the brig of sounding smug. You slowly let the smoke out of your mouth and watched it curl towards the open sky. "Sorry love, I used my last one..." You snarked, stuffing the actual full box of matches back into your coat pocket. Lizzie snorted, lowering her cig between her fingers, eyes carefully watching your reactions.
"Never 'eard you so quiet befor'. Normally you're much more talkative." She commented, finally pulling out her own lighter and lighting her cancer stick. She kept her eyes on you as you scoffed. "I'm more talkative with my fiance Lizzie, the very fiance you seem to still have your devilish claws sunk in to..." A sound between a laugh and a scoff escaped her red coated lips as she inhaled the nicotine in her stick. "Not my fuckin' fault he prefers my company over yours Y/n." You let out a light laugh, your eyes flickering over to Lizzie. "I seem to remember you having to drag him away from my side." Your tone now took on a more smug tone. "You had your fuckin' chance Lizzie, you blew it. Why don't you try your luck with Tommy instead?" You mocked, taking another drag of your cigarette. A frown covered her lips at your words. "Don't go there Y/n!" She snapped, glaring towards you. "Why? It's no fuckin secret you like him. It wouldn't even surprise me if you were planning on using John to get closer to Tommy..." You had barely finished your sentence when Lizzie took a threatening step towards you, her glare much more harsh then before. "I loved him!" Your head snapped towards the angry woman, your own eyes glaring into hers.
"Loved who? John or Tommy? If you really loved John Lizzie, you would have stopped your little night job and started helping him with his kids. If you really loved John, you would have said 'no' to Tommy when he asked for one last fuck before you married his brother." You said harshly, causing Lizzie to flinch and take a step back. "Now I think it's time you moved the fuck on from him already. He's not bloody marryin' you anymore, he's marryin' me! And I think it's time you start fuckin' respecting me and my relationship with John." You snapped, getting tired of her shit, tossing your now burned out cancer stick onto the ground. You turned from her, ready to go back inside and reprimand John to get him to sit next to you from now on when Lizzie opened her mouth, wanting to have the last word.
"He loves me you know!" She called out, purposely not using past tense. "And one day he'll leave you for me! It's always been me Y/n! When he came back from the war, it was me he chose to spend his nights with! You just happened to capture his attention before I could get back into his good graces. I may have broken his heart, but I was so close to fixing it before you came into the fuckin' picture! You may be his fiance Y/n, but I will always have a place in his heart, you and I both know it!" You could feel your hands curling into fists at your sides. You look over your shoulder at her, a sad smile on your face. "I know. But you know something, he doesn't need you anymore. He has me now. To help him with his kids, to help with any stress he may have, to take some of the burdens he carries off his weary shoulders...to fuck him when he needs me to. Keeping all that in mind, what use would he have for you?" A smirk curled on your lips, pausing to take in her hurt expression before making your way back in the Garrison, eyes immediately stopping on your fiance's gaze, raising your eyebrow towards him, a silent demand to get off his ass and take a seat in the empty seat that was beside yours.
John cleared his throat before glancing around, making sure none of the Garrison's patrons were paying attention before smoothly getting up and making his way over to his brothers who noticed the exchange and were chuckling. You quickly look back over to Lizzie who had gone silent. "Have a nice night Lizzie. Now I didn't want to fight with you tonight Lizzie, but I love him. And i'm going to fight for our relationship no matter what. So I suggest you learn to respect our relationship and boundaries, or this fight will quickly get physical." You threatened, finally walking back inside, leaving Lizzie outside. You made your way towards John, giving him a small smile before taking a seat right next to him.
"Let me just say one thing John Shelby," You started, cupping his chin in your hand, your nails slightly digging in to his pale skin, "if I see you alone with Lizzie Stark again...it won't end well for either of you." You warned, voice low as you spoke harshly at your fiance. John swallowed nervously, nodding his head in agreement. "Good." You answered, letting him go before turning to your drink, eyes glancing up when Lizzie came back into the pub. She seemed slightly embarrassed, walking fast towards the bar and taking a seat by herself. Good. Your threat seemed to have gotten through to her. Now all you had to do was mark up your future husband, and show him, and her, who was boss.
