Jake quickly makes his way over to me and wraps me in his arms.
"Shh. It's okay. We'll find them," he whispers as my body goes limp and I fall, Jake sits on the ground with me on his lap.
Footsteps thunder around us as I cry into Jake's shoulder.
"Jake? What happened?" I hear Quil ask.
"Where's Seth and Embry? Go get them," his voice rumbles through his body.
All of the sudden, my brain isn't telling my limbs what to do. They just get up on their own and start walking.
"Alex! Where are you going?!" Jake calls after me.
"Going to find them!" I yell back before I start running.
>>>
"You know. Phasing would probably help," Jake says from behind me as I attempt to track them without phasing.
"If they're still out here, phasing is the last thing I want to have to explain," I say.
"Suit yourself," he says, then I hear him phase almost so quietly that I couldn't hear him. His footsteps get softer as he gets further and further away.
After at least ten minutes of contemplation, I strip and strap my clothes to my leg, then phase.
Jake: [Nice to see you listened!]
Me: [Shush.]
I quickly and easily catch Brittany's scent. Her favorite perfume that she wears every day. I follow it for miles. It is as if it's fresh.
All of the sudden, a new wave of scent slams me in the face. Sickly sweet. A leech.
I push myself faster to try and catch up.
>>>
I come flying into a clearing, when I see a very frightened Brittany and Makenlee facing a new leech.
Me: [I found them! In the clearing just north of the south border!]
Quil: [I'm headed your way.]
Jake: [Don't do anything dumb!]
Me: [No promises!]
I quickly phase back and yank my clothes on.
"Brittany! Makenlee! Get back!" I yell as I push my legs to run faster than they ever have before. I will not let this leech kill my two best friends.
"Alex?" Brittany asks, when I skid to a stop in between them.
"Get away from them," I growl at the leech.
"Alex, stop! He was just helping us find our way back!" Makenlee says.
"No he's not. Both of you, get back. Now!" I say, "Get back!"
They stumble back at my sudden outburst. I hear footsteps slamming themselves toward us.
"Why are you here?" I growl lowly at the leech.
"Why should I tell you?" he asks.
"Well you have two choices. The easy way or the hard way. You could either tell me why you're here, or I can rip your head off. Your choice," I say quite rudely if you ask me.
"Alex, don't!" Sam yells at me from across the clearing. Then I hear his footsteps get closer, along with another pair.
"What? Don't want me to suck your little friends here dry?" The leech asks. My fingernails dig into m palms. A low growl rumbles through my whole body, ripping from my chest.
