I wake up the next day with a crick in my neck, and a pounding headache. "Alan?" I call out, hoping he hears. Apparently, he does, because my bunk curtain is opening.
"Hey gorgeous. How ya feeling?" He asks. "Can I have some Advil?" I ask. He nods, "Sit tight, I'll be back."
He returns with a pill and a juice box. I take the pill and lay back down. "Smiley, we might have to get you to a doctor," Alan says. I nod in agreement.
"Joey'll sit with you while I call the doctor," Alan says. I nod, not really feeling like talking. Alan walks off and Joey approaches me. "Hey homie," he whispers. "Joe, where're we?" I ask. "We'll be at South Dakota in like twenty minutes," he replies.
"Jowy, come here," I whine. He chuckles, and sits on the floor next to my bunk. "Yes love?" He asks very quietly. "Can you get me some grits?" I ask him.
"What the heck is grits?!" He asks louder. "This delicious corn stuff that I wanna eat right now," I answer. "Mia, I don't think we have any grits," he replies. I shrug, "Find some."
Jeff stops at a store, and everybody goes in except me and Caleb. "I'm tired of being sick," I complain. "I'm tired of you being sick, kiddo," he laughs. I nod, "Make me better!"
"I'm not a doctor," he replies. I laugh, "I know! I just want my grits!" He shakes his head, "What is it with you and your grits, Mia?" I shrug, "I dunno. My step brother Jaxon, and my sister Meghan and I used to make grits with gravy all the time."
Before too long, Chad, Joey, and Alan are standing next to me. "Where's my grits?" I ask. "Well, hello to you too Mia!" Chad exclaims. I giggle, "Fine. Hello guys! Where're my grits? Better Chad?" He nods, "Much better."
Joey holds up a can of grits and tosses it at my face. I catch it and throw it back at him, "Cook it." He shakes his head, "Mia, what's the magic word?" I giggle, "Please cook it." He nods, "Better." Joey leaves the room to go and try to cook them for me.
"How ya feeling honey?" Alan asks, squatting next to my bed. "I'm okay, Alan," I reply. He locks his eyes on mine, "You sure?" I nod, "Yes. I'm good." He grins, "Okay. I'm glad you're feeling better. I still got you an appointment with a doctor around here." I nod, "Okay dude."
Joey returns with my grits. "Here you go, love. Happy now?" I nod, "Yes. Thank you for these grits." Chad laughs, "We went through a lot of trouble to get those." I spoon bite after bite into my mouth.
After I finish the entire bowl. I hand Joey the empty bowl. "And what am I supposed to do with this?" He asks. "Uh wash it!" I exclaim. He smiles, "Okay."
"Kiddo, your appointment is in about twenty minutes. You might wanna shower or somethin'," Caleb says. I nod, and climb out of bed despite the pounding headache. I grab a pair of yoga pants, and a baggy tshirt and go to the bus bathroom.
I rinse off and wash my hair and stuff. Then I get dressed and blow dry my hair. After putting my hair in a bun, and clipping a bow in my hair I'm ready to go.
Alan and I get off the bus, and begin walking the few blocks to the clinic. Of course, I get tired so I hop on his back. He doesn't seem to mind though, since I'm sick.
"We're here," Alan bluntly points out. I get off of him as we enter the clinic. Alan takes the clipboard and fills out some paperwork on me, while I listen to some music. I lean my head on his shoulder, because my head is literally killing me.
"It's okay, smiley, you rest," he whispers. I watch him while he writes down various things about me. Soon, a nurse comes out and calls my name.
Alan follows me into the examination room. "So, Mia, what's been bothering you?" The nurse asks. I shrug while Alan explains everything. "She's had headaches, and been really sleepy and weak lately," he says. She types a few things in on her computer. Before leaving, she takes my temperature and blood pressure, and checks my pulse.
"Did you call mom and Josh?" I ask him, while we're waiting for the doctor. He nods, "Yeah. Your mom is worried, but Josh said you'd be fine with me."
"This is the longest time I've been away from my mom since my dad died," I whisper. It's hard to read Alan's facial expression, "We can talk anytime, you know?" I nod, "I know Alan. Maybe I'll talk to you on the bus later."
The doctor comes in, and after a thorough examination, says I have an acute sinus infection. He's putting me on an antibiotic. After that, we're back on the bus in no time.
"Hey girl, you feeling any better?" Chad asks. I shrug, "Sinus infections suck." He nods, "I know. Your meds will kick in soon, kid, hang in there."
"You still up for tonight's show?" Joey asks. I nod eagerly, "Wouldn't miss it for the world." He grins, "Awesome! You're gonna have so much fun!"
"Ready for English class with Mr. Grimm?" Caleb asks. I shake my head, "No. I'm too sick for English class." He wags a finger, "If you want to go to the show, you'll do English class." I rolls my eyes, "Fine. Whatever."
We work on English for about an hour, then decide to go sightseeing in the city.
We go to Mount Rushmore; Alan turns it into a history lesson. Chad gets bored with Alan's lesson and decides we should go to RapidCity.
We ride a ton of rides and get absolutely soaked. Jeff had to get us all towels just so we could get on the bus.
"We gotta get ready for sound check," Caleb says. "Did you make a set list yet?" I ask eagerly. Joey shakes his head, "No, but you can."
I get a piece of paper and begin writing.

"Here's your set list goofball!" I exclaim, showing Alan the list. He grins, and reads it over, "You did good, smiley."
The bus stops and we're at this big church. I try to leave the bus, but feel a hand on my shoulder. "Nice try, now help us," he says. I sigh, "Whatever Chad." I end up carrying Alan's guitar inside. We're greeted at the door by the pastor.
"Hey guys! I'm Pastor Reid," he says. Alan smiles, "We talked on the phone, right?" He nods, "Yes we did Mr. Powell." He shakes hands with Alan, Caleb, Chad, and Joey.
"Who're you young lady?" He asks me. "I'm Mia," I say shyly shaking his hand. "She's staying with me and family for a while due to personal issues," Alan says. Pastor Reid smiles, "Ah, well come on in!"
