"Meredith's scans.. they don't look good" Christopher sighed "We found mets in her spine" He added
"No" Carolyn gasped and quickly enough some tears escaped her eyes
"We need to give her chemo twice a week.. maybe 3 times a week" Arizona said as she looked at the scans again
"3 times?" Carolyn whispered
"I wanna try radiation" Richard said
"Both spine and head?" Nelson questioned
Richard nodded again
"We can't do that! She's only 6!" Arizona said
"I agree with doctor Robbins. It's way too risky for a 6 year old to undergo radiation" Christopher spoke up
"I'm her medical proxy" Richard stated
"You can't decide about her life like that! What if she develops brain damage?" Carolyn spoke up
"I can. Her mother gave custody to me. I received the papers today" Richard said
"We try 4 sessions, not more" Nelson said sternly. We have to start today. I'll set up the appointment to make the mole for her face"
"I can do that" Carolyn said and quickly hurried her way to get changed
"Carolyn, stop!" She heard her husband's voice
"I need to go with her" Carolyn frowned
"I agree but not as a nurse. You can't help her through radiation as a nurse" her husband said
Carolyn nodded and understood what he meant
She went to Meredith's room while Christopher would call the babysitter to ask is she could come get the kids and bring them home
"Meredith, sweetie. Wake up for me, will you?"
"Wh-a w-wong?" Meredith slurred
"Meredith, the cancer has spread. We need to try other things-" Carolyn started to explain as Meredith's eyes widened in fear "We'll try radiation first and probably more chemo" She said but her voice started cracking towards the end
Meredith didn't really respond except for her try to hide underneath the blankets
"It will be okay. I'm coming with you" Carolyn said
Meredith frowned and looked at Carolyn's casual looking clothes "s-scw-ubs?"
"You're right. I'm here but not as your nurse, okay? You mean a lot to me, Christopher and the kids, Meredith. We all love you"
"R-reawwy?"
"Really" Carolyn confirmed
"L-luf t-too" Meredith smiled as some nurses entered the room to bring Meredith to radiation
...
The mold had been made earlier that day and now it was time to start radiation. Nelson was here to make sure they kept checking on her neurological side during the treatment
"Okay, Meredith. I need you to remember 3 words. Bike, boat and car, okay?" Nelson asked through the intercom
"B-bi-ke b-oat uh- caww" She silently repeated
"You're doing great. We're gonna start now and it's very important that you're staying still, okay?" Nelson checked
Meredith agreed and soon enough the first pzrt had started
Meredith got turned around halfway so they could now radiate the area of her spine
"It burns" She whispered
"I'll take care of it later, sweetie. You're being so brave" Carolyn said through the intercom
Once they finally were able to get Meredith out, she passed the neuro check and they brought her back to her room
"D-don't w-wa-nnna" She started sobbing
Carolyn's heart broke and she grabbed the cream to moisturize the spots that just had been radiated, she also did the same with Meredith's hands and lips who were very dry because of the chemo
"-m cold" She whispered
Carolyn covered Meredith with as much blankets as possible while trying to not hurt her
"Is this okay?" Carolyn asked and Meredith slightly nodded her head "Take a nap. I'm staying"
...
Arizona entered Meredith's room and saw the little girl was fast asleep while Carolyn's head was resting on Meredith's bed, she must have fallen asleep
"Carolyn? I'm sorry for waking you" Arizona said as she woke up the older woman "I have to examine Meredith"
"Oh, of course" Carolyn smiled and woke up Meredith
"Hi, Meredith. How are you doing?" Arizona asked
Meredith just closed her eyes again as she eyed the blonde doctor standing in front of her
"Meredith, sweetie, can you try to answer my question?" Arizona asked concerned
Meredith shook her head in response
"Mer, is it because of the mouth sores?" Carolyn asked concerned, this tile they got a nod in response
"Can you open your mouth for me?" Arizona asked
Meredith slowly opened her mouth a bit despite the pain
Arizona examined her mouth but Meredith cried it out when Arizona accidentally touched one
"It's okay. It's okay" Carolyn brushed her fingers over Meredith's head as she took a seat next to Meredith
"I'll administer some more pain meds" Arizona smiled sadly
Meredith rested her head on Carolyn's chest who covered up Meredith's bald head in response
Carolyn sang a song she always used to sing for her own kids and waited until Meredith fell back asleep
Carolyn woke up by the sound of Meredith and some nurses "S-St-op" Meredith whimpered
"Hey, what's wrong?" Carolyn asked concerned
"We're trying to prep her for her next chemo" The nurse said
"I'll do it" Carolyn said and smiled
"Thanks" The nurses said and left the room
"No m-mo-wre" Meredith begged
"We need you to get better so the chemo is really necessary" Carolyn told Meredith
"I don't wann-a be s-i-ck" Meredith whispered as she started sobbing
"I know, I know" Carolyn sighed. her heart broke for the little girl
"Whe-we uh- mommy?"
"She's busy. She's on a work trip" Carolyn lied as she didn't wanna break the little girl's heart
"A-my?" Meredith whispered
"You want Amelia to come over?" Carolyn asked and Meredith nodded in response "Maybe tomorrow?"
Meredith nodded again but felt sick. She started gagging and Carolyn was right on tile to grab the bucket so Meredith could vomit
Carolyn rubbed Meredith's back as the little girl kept throwing up
Once the vomiting was over, Carolyn held Meredith close to her chest
...
"She's way too skinny. We need to do something" Arizona said
"She has a feeding tube, there's not much more we can do" Richard sighed
"She ate a bit of mashed potatoes and apple sauce at our house. I can try to let her eat more but with her getting more chemo I'm afraid it won't be possible" Christopher said
"We need to try.. this can cause problems in her developing" Arizona sighed
The doctors nodded and took off
